Job description

Department:  Highways

Pay:  $17.04 per hour  

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday-7:00am-3:30pm; 2200 S Webb Rd

Operates large tractor mowers to maintain public rights-of-way, ensuring safe and aesthetically pleasing roadways and public spaces. The role includes working along high-speed roadways, performing basic maintenance on mowing equipment, assisting with various public works construction tasks, and supporting team operations. As experience grows, the position may include leading a team of mowers; increasing levels of autonomy as experience develops. Works independently and in a team environment.

Mows and maintains right of way along established routes

  • Operates large tractors or other mowing equipment with or without attachments; removes debris and litter from areas required to be maintained.
  • Operates a chain saw, weed trimmer and other landscape tools for grass and brush trimming.
  • Performs pre-trip inspections and routine maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Follows safety procedures and traffic laws; maintains awareness of surrounding traffic and work environment.  
  • Utilizes personal protective equipment.
  • Experienced staff will lead small mower teams and operate a truck and trailer to transport mowing tractors and related equipment between sites.
  • Performs minor maintenance on equipment
  • Performs minor servicing work such as refueling, lubricating, washing and making minor equipment adjustments.
  • Conducts basic preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment, such as sharpening blades, greasing, and cleaning filters.
  • Performs manual work as assigned.
  • Performs road construction and maintenance
  • Assists with other public works construction activities, including work zone flagging and traffic control, ditch maintenance and repair, filling potholes, and basic road repair.

Minimum Qualifications: Experience and Education: Must be at least 18 years old and possess a High School diploma or equivalent. Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver's license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance.
