Job description

Summary: Under the direction of the Public Works Supervisor and Director, the Public Works Assistant, under general supervision, performs a variety of maintenance tasks on buildings and facilities, streets, waterways, parks; and performs related work as required. Performance is reviewed by the Public Works Supervisor and Director.
The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.
Essential Job Duties:
• Performs the painting of buildings, ramps, streets, crosswalks and parking lots using striping machines and other tools and equipment as required;
• Performs the application of asphalt or concrete in the repair of ramps, sidewalks, streets and parking lots;
• Performs landscape work as assigned;
• Performs general janitorial functions;
• Performs minor carpentry and plumbing repairs;
• Performs the care and maintenance of plants, transplants, prunes, trims trees, lawns and shrubs;
• Operates light construction and maintenance equipment as required;
• Operates front end loader, grader, backhoe, bulldozer, sweeper, tractor, or roller;
• Supervises the installs and repairs of fences as required.
• Assists in the maintenance of inventory of equipment and supplies;
• Represents the municipality at public and private meetings/conferences, participating and negotiating as authorized in solving public works and planning problems;
Other Important Duties:
• Performs all duties required by law, ordinance, resolution or State Law.
• Will be required to work some evenings and weekends.
• Attends and travels to meetings, conferences and training for the better interest of the municipality.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Mayor and Council.
• Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
• Good knowledge of grounds and building maintenance work; of the operation of light construction and maintenance equipment; of safety precautions and procedures; of traffic laws
• Knowledge of regulatory requirements, duties and responsibilities.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
• Knowledge of Federal, State and City laws, rules, regulations, ordinances and codes governing municipal public buildings and facilities and municipal administrative management practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
• Proficiency in the use of computers and related equipment, hardware and software.
• Ability to answer questions regarding municipal regulations and ordinances and status of communications, resolutions and other official actions.
• Skill in effective oral and written communications.
• Skill in resolving customer complaints and concerns.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees
Preferred Education, Experience, and Certifications:
• Two years experience in grounds and general building maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background check and MVR check.
• Must possess valid State of Texas Driver’s License, Class C.
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:
• Work is performed in the outdoors with portion in an office setting.
• May be subject to occasional bending, reaching, kneeling and lifting such as retrieving or replacing public documents and records, setting up for City Council meetings, or transporting informational packets and meeting agendas and reports.
• Perform light to heavy manual labor;
• To work under adverse weather conditions.
Equipment and Tools Utilized:
• Equipment utilized includes Grader, Front End Loader, Backhoe Loader, Street Sweeper, Chipper, Dump Truck, Water Truck, Mower (Rotary Cutter);
• Variety of hand tools;
• Personal computer, copier, calculator, fax machine, standard office equipment, and department vehicles.
Salary Range:
$ 14.00 - $18.00 Hourly
$ 1,240.00- $1,440.00 Bi-Weekly
$ 2,240.00- $2,880.00 Monthly
