Job description

Description

The Blake's Orchard Inc. U-Pick Attendant is the face of our u-pick experience, guiding guests through one of the most beloved and hands-on activities our farm has to offer. This role is responsible for welcoming guests to the u-pick fields, explaining the picking process, processing purchases at checkout, and ensuring a positive, informative experience from arrival to departure. The U-Pick Attendant works across all applicable u-pick crops throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons, serving as a knowledgeable and enthusiastic ambassador for what's growing on the farm.

Seasonal Crops Overview

U-Pick Attendants are expected to develop familiarity with each crop and its corresponding season. Current u-pick offerings include, but are not limited to:

  • Spring - Tulips and strawberries
  • Summer - Lavender and various produce
  • Late Summer - Sunflowers and seasonal produce
  • Fall - Pumpkins, Apples and seasonal produce

Additional crops and offerings may be introduced throughout the season. Attendants will be kept informed of what is available and ready for picking at any given time.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Greet guests upon arrival to the u-pick area and provide a friendly, informative introduction to the experience
  • Explain the u-pick process clearly, including picking guidelines, container options, pricing structure, and any rules specific to the crop or field
  • Educate guests on the current crops available, how to identify ripe or ready-to-pick produce and flowers, and proper harvesting techniques to avoid damage
  • Share seasonal knowledge about what's growing on the farm to enhance the guest experience and encourage curiosity
  • Accurately weigh, count, or measure guest selections based on the pricing method for each crop
  • Process guest purchases using the point-of-sale system, handling cash, card, and any other accepted payment methods
  • Provide correct change and receipts as applicable, maintaining accuracy in all transactions
  • Maintain an organized and well-stocked checkout area throughout the shift
  • Communicate current pricing, promotions, and any purchasing limits to guests at checkout
  • Keep the u-pick entrance, checkout station, and surrounding areas clean, tidy, and visually welcoming
  • Restock containers, bags, or baskets used for picking as needed
  • Stay up to date on daily crop availability, field closures, and any changes to the u-pick offerings
  • Support fellow team members during high-traffic periods to ensure a smooth guest experience
  • Represent the farm with professionalism, enthusiasm, and a passion for agriculture and the outdoors

Education, Skills & Knowledge

  • Outgoing, approachable personality with a passion for working with people and spending time outdoors
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain processes clearly to guests of all ages
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons
  • Ability to stand and remain active for extended periods of time
  • Basic math skills and comfort handling cash transactions and operating a point-of-sale system
  • Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple guests and tasks simultaneously

Working Conditions

This is a seasonal, primarily outdoor position. U-Pick Attendants must be comfortable working in sun, heat, and other seasonal weather conditions for the duration of their shift. Availability on weekends is strongly preferred, as u-pick activities tend to draw the highest guest traffic on Saturdays and Sundays. Scheduling varies by crop season and farm activity, with peak periods occurring during spring flower season, the summer harvest, and fall pumpkin season.
