What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle) Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an SDLC Manager, you need a strong background in software development methodologies, project management, and process optimization, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), version control systems (such as Git), and certifications like PMP or Agile/Scrum Master are highly valued. Leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities are essential soft skills to effectively coordinate teams and manage project timelines. These skills ensure efficient software delivery, high-quality products, and alignment between technical teams and business objectives.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working within the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) process?

Professionals involved in the SDLC often encounter challenges such as coordinating communication among cross-functional teams, managing shifting project requirements, and ensuring adherence to timelines without compromising quality. Balancing thorough documentation with agile practices can also be difficult, as can maintaining consistent testing and deployment practices across projects. Being proactive in addressing these challenges through regular meetings, clear documentation, and collaborative tools can help teams stay aligned and deliver successful software solutions.

What is SDLC?

SDLC stands for Software Development Life Cycle. It is a systematic process used by software developers and engineers to design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain software applications. The SDLC consists of several distinct phases, including requirement gathering, planning, designing, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance. Following the SDLC helps ensure that software is delivered efficiently, meets customer requirements, and is of high quality.

What is the difference between Sdlc vs Software Tester?

AspectSdlcSoftware Tester
Primary RoleDefines and manages the software development process from planning to deploymentTests software to identify bugs and ensure quality
Required SkillsProject management, requirements analysis, development lifecycle knowledgeTesting methodologies, defect tracking, attention to detail
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with developers, project managers, and stakeholdersWorks closely with developers and QA teams during testing phases
CertificationsPM certifications, SDLC frameworks knowledgeISTQB, CSTE certifications often preferred

While SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle) focuses on managing the entire software development process, a Software Tester specializes in evaluating the software to ensure quality. Both roles are essential in software projects, with SDLC providing the framework and Software Testers executing testing activities within that framework.

Job description

Title: SDLC & API Architect
Location: Dallas, TX
Duration: Permanent Position
Compensation: $200,000 - $350,000/year
Work Requirements: US Citizen, GC Holders or Authorized to Work in the U.S.
SDLC & API Architect
The SDLC & API Architect will define and own the end-to-end software delivery lifecycle
platform and API enablement strategy for the engineering teams. This role will
establish the tooling stack, design developer workflows, and ensure governance, auditing,
and compliance against architectural decisions. The architect will drive self-service
developer experiences, define APIs and developer portal requirements, and document
key decisions. This role will partner with the Platform Engineering org.
Responsibilities:
  • Establish the enterprise SDLC tooling stack (GitHub/GitLab, CI/CD, registries, artifact repositories, build runners, deployment tooling).
  • Design and document the software delivery lifecycle model, including separation of duties (developers vs. administrators vs. customer workloads), GenAI integration, etc.
  • Drive paved paths / golden templates for engineering teams, ensuring consistency and adoption of best practices.
  • Drive Strong API contracts and Consistency across interfaces.
  • Define auditing, and compliance guardrails across repos, pipelines, and deployments; guidance for migrating tooling/pipelines.
  • Produce and maintain Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) to capture SDL and API gateway architectural decisions.
  • Architect the developer experience (DX) through an Internal Developer Portal (IDP), integrating SDLC workflows and APIs; guidance on access lifecycle management.
  • Define self-service APIs/capabilities (repo creation, namespace provisioning, cluster onboarding, pipeline bootstrap);
  • Lead API gateway strategy (domain boundaries, API Catalog, governance) - both internal self-service and external customers.
  • Perform capability mapping and gap analysis across organizational units and customer needs, identifying improvements to platform capabilities.
  • Optimize for Flow by helping streamline SDLC with the "Ways of Working" initiative measuring engineering productivity.
  • Partner with Security, Platform, and Solution Architecture to embed DevSecOps practices into delivery pipelines.
  • Partner with Developer Experience and UX Architects to ensure frictionless, standardized workflows.

Required Skills:
  • Strong expertise in DevOps and SDLC tooling: GitHub/GitLab, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, ArgoCD, Jenkins/Tekton, Nexus/Artifactory.
  • Experience with API management platforms: Kong, Tyk, Apigee or similar.
  • Deep understanding of software delivery lifecycle design (branching, release strategies, artifact promotion, separation of duties).
  • Hands-on with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and GitOps patterns.
  • Knowledge of auditing, compliance, and governance in multi-tenant SDLC environments.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to produce ADRs and platform documentation.
  • Proven ability to work with cross-functional teams (engineering, ops, compliance, customer success).

Preferred Experience:
  • 12+ years in DevOps, Platform Engineering, or Software Architecture.
  • Experience implementing an Internal Developer Portal (IDP) (Backstage, Port, ServiceNow integrations).
  • Designing self-service workflows for developers (repo creation, namespace/cluster provisioning etc.).
  • Exposure to multi-tenant platform models and customer-facing workload separation.
  • Knowledge/Experience with Consul integrations with Kubernetes, Vault, or other relevant platforms.
  • Prior work on capability mapping and gap analysis to drive platform roadmap.
  • Experience in integrating GenAI into SDLC.
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance frameworks as applied to SDLC processes
