Job description

Overview
This position is responsible for the daily work and work flow within the Surgical Care Unit (SCU). The Clinical Coordinator/SCU Charge RN supervises the nursing staff in coordinating schedules, nursing assignments and patient care in the preoperative and postoperative phases of surgery from preadmission through discharge.
Responsibilities
Daily staffing: Assigns nursing staff according to caseload, types of surgery cases, and staffing needs in accordance with Title 22. Knows the strengths of each staff member and works to provide ongoing training and mentoring as needed to bring all staff to similar levels of expertise in both the pre and post op care of surgery patients. Assigns and gives breaks and lunches. Steps in to assist when needed in all areas when there are sick calls or emergencies. Creates and maintains the six-week work and call schedule; coordinates with staff to insure accuracy and fairness.
Maintains accurate daily and monthly checks for department: assigns daily check-offs including glucometer, crash cart, and others per unit policy. Responsible for overseeing the maintenance, restocking as needed, and outdates for crash cart, Malignant Hyperthermia carts, and Broselow carts
Surgery daily flow: Leads and coordinates the inflow and outflow of patients; watches for delays of surgery and communicates to team and patient/family, as needed. Must maintain sight of the 'big picture' each day and make adjustments to room and nurse assignments as necessary. Keeps staff informed throughout day and conducts a daily huddle as needed to review the day and challenges.
Communicates with anesthesiologists and surgeons concerning timing, delays, and any changes to the daily schedule. Writes the daily schedule on the tracking board as patients are admitted and works meticulously to keep the information current and updated.
Maintains good working relationship with Clinical Coordinator/Charge - OR RN for coordination of care for all patients in all phases of the surgical process. Has frequent and effective communication throughout the day to expedite with accuracy and safety the daily workload. Assists with coordination of add-on cases including inpatients for timing, staffing, as well as communication out to all other necessary persons.
Oversees the Nurse Navigation and Outpatient Infusion process and team: works with director to review workflow, suggest and implement changes.
Direct oversight of the daily workflow of Unit/Nursing Assistant and all other ancillary resources coming to the unit. Assigns duties as needed. Oversees stocking of supplies and ordering of supplies for unit. Coordinates with admitting staff, volunteers and others for the smooth coordination of care for all SCU patients.
Ensures a safe and productive work environment. Assists the director in providing ongoing training to staff and in collecting performance improvement data. Assists director with quality metrics and performance improvement for SCU.
Provides feedback to the director and participates in hiring decisions and performance evaluations for SCU RN staff, Nurse Navigator, Perioperative Administrative Coordinator, and SCU Unit/Nursing Assistant. Provides leadership when the director is unavailable and acts as a role model to all staff
Qualifications
Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program. BSN preferred.
Experience: At least 2 years pre-op and/or P.A.C.U. experience; minimum 1 year leadership experience.
Licenses & Certifications: Current California RN license; ACLS; BLS; PALS
Required Skills & Knowledge: Strong communication skills; ability to multi-task with strong organization and coordination skills. Proficient on computer with skills in Microsoft Office and Outlook.

Actual compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate's experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
