Scrum Master Release Manager information

What is a Scrum Master Release Manager?

Scrum Master Release Managers are professionals who combine the responsibilities of a Scrum Master and a Release Manager. They facilitate agile processes within development teams, ensuring that scrum practices are followed to enhance team productivity and collaboration. At the same time, they coordinate and manage the release of software products, ensuring that releases are delivered on time, meet quality standards, and align with business objectives. This dual role bridges the gap between agile team leadership and the technical management of software releases.

How does a Scrum Master Release Manager typically collaborate with development and QA teams during a release cycle?

A Scrum Master Release Manager works closely with both development and QA teams to ensure smooth and timely product releases. They facilitate regular communication, help remove obstacles, and coordinate sprint planning and review meetings. During a release cycle, they monitor progress, manage dependencies, and ensure that quality standards are met, often acting as a bridge between technical teams and stakeholders. This collaborative approach helps identify potential risks early and keeps the release process aligned with business goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Scrum Master Release Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Scrum Master Release Manager, you need expertise in Agile methodologies, Scrum practices, and release management, typically supported by certifications like Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or PMI-ACP. Familiarity with tools such as Jira, Confluence, and CI/CD pipelines is essential for managing sprints and coordinating releases. Strong facilitation, problem-solving, and communication skills help you guide teams and resolve cross-functional challenges. These skills ensure timely, high-quality software delivery and foster a collaborative, adaptive team environment.

What is the difference between Scrum Master Release Manager vs Scrum Master Release Manager?

AspectScrum Master Release Manager

The Scrum Master Release Manager combines Agile Scrum facilitation with release planning and coordination. While the Scrum Master focuses on team processes, removing impediments, and ensuring Agile practices, the Release Manager oversees the planning, scheduling, and deployment of software releases. Both roles require certifications like Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) and knowledge of Agile and release management tools. The roles often work together in software development environments, especially in organizations practicing Agile methodologies with continuous delivery. Understanding the distinction helps organizations assign clear responsibilities for efficient project delivery.

Are Scrum Master Release Managers being phased out?

Scrum Master Release Managers are not being phased out; their roles remain important in coordinating Agile teams and managing releases. As organizations adopt DevOps practices and continuous delivery, these roles may evolve to include more technical responsibilities, but the core function of facilitating Agile processes persists.

Job description

In a world of possibilities, pursue one with endless opportunities. Imagine Next!At Parsons, you can imagine a career where you thrive, work with exceptional people, and be yourself. Guided by our leadership vision of valuing people, embracing agility, and fostering growth, we cultivate an innovative culture that empowers you to achieve your full potential. Unleash your talent and redefine what's possible.

Job Description:

Parsons is looking for an amazingly talented Scrum Master/Release Train Engineer to join our team! In this role you will serve in an execution position critical of advancing the Department's data and AI capabilities. You will operate utilizing Palantir Foundry's object-oriented data environment, you will track sprint cycles, manage Epics, and orchestrate Program Increments (PI). Your daily focus will shift constantly between macro-level program health (aligning technical tracks to Joint Staff CDAO mission objectives as an RTE) and micro-level team execution (coaching data engineers and scientists as a Scrum Master).

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Program Orchestration & DUC Development:Align multiple technical tracks (data ingestion, pipelines, front-end) to CDAO mission objectives and facilitate Digital Use Case (DUC) development across multi-directorate stakeholders.
  • Team Execution & Unblocking:Coach individual developers and data scientists, facilitate standard Agile ceremonies, shield the team from scope creep, and actively identify, track, and resolve execution blockers alongside the team.
  • Palantir Epic & PI Management:Manage Epics and PIs as custom Object Types within Foundry's Ontology, orchestrating PI Planning using interactive Palantir Workshop dashboards and Notepad documents to map visual object links.
  • Palantir Sprint Tracking:Organize data-centric sprints (e.g., finalizing a writeback function or PySpark transform) using Foundry Tasks rather than traditional flat ticketing databases.
  • Custom Metrics & Live Reporting:Build custom analytical workflows in Palantir Contour or Quiver to track velocity and bottlenecks, presenting real-time, interactive data apps directly to federal clients during Sprint Reviews.
  • Government Liaison & Scope Control:Translate complex Agile metrics into formal status reports for government Contracting Officer's Representatives (CORs), balancing Agile flexibility with rigid federal Statement of Work (SOW) boundaries.
  • Security & ATO Gatekeeping:Ensure all development work aligns with federal security requirements (e.g., FedRAMP controls, Authority to Operate / ATO conditions) before it is slated for a release train.

What Required Skills You'll Bring:

  • Clearance:Active TS/SCI security clearance.
  • 7-10 years' experience supporting Joint Staff or Joint Force products or projects as a Scrum Master or related responsibilities
  • Bachelors degree in related field or STEM program
  • Agile Certification:Certified Scrum Master (CSM), SAFe Scrum Master (SSM), or equivalent baseline Agile certification.
  • Federal Experience:Proven experience working in a federal or DoD contracting environment, with a working understanding of SOW execution and DoD security/ATO constraints.
  • Blocker Resolution:Demonstrated ability to proactively identify execution blockers, communicate them effectively, and work collaboratively inside a technical team to drive resolution.
  • Technical Acumen:Experience managing software development, data engineering, or data science teams, with the ability to comprehend and unblock complex data pipeline dependencies.

What Desired Skills You'll Bring:

  • 10+ Years' experience supporting Joint Staff or Joint Force projects or products as a Scrum Master
  • Masters degree in related field or STEM Program
  • Pod Model Delivery:Proven experience organizing, managing, and scaling technical teams utilizing Project Oriented Delivery (Pod) models.
  • DUC Management:Experience guiding Digital Use Case (DUC) development, including requirements gathering, prioritizing features, and managing competing interests for multi-directorate stakeholders.
  • Advanced Agile Certification:Active SAFe Release Train Engineer (RTE) certification or SAFe Program Consultant (SPC).
  • Palantir Foundry Expertise:Proven, hands-on experience structuring Agile workflows, Ontologies, and custom metrics specifically within Palantir Foundry (e.g., configuring Foundry Tasks, Workshop, Quiver, Contour).
  • Mission Context:Prior experience directly supporting the Joint Staff, CDAO, or enterprise-level DoD AI/ML and data integration initiatives.
