Scope of Responsibility:

The Engineer I - Product Design will work with the Telecom Products Group and various Sabre departments to produce designs, drawings and documentation for new and innovative products that meet company and customer expectations and are production feasible, cost effective and accurate. This position will build knowledge of industry standards and Sabre Procedures.

Essential Duties:

  • Works with the Telecom Products Group, Sabre Site Solutions group, Small Cell Products group and others to create and implement new innovative products, improve and standardize products and reduce cost.
  • Designs aesthetically pleasing, thermally efficient and structurally sound products using FEA and other analysis methods to check and optimize designs
  • Produces production ready designs and drawings considering production feasibility, cost, manufacturability, labor requirements, shipping, and design accuracy
  • Maintain and improve catalog part number system to assist with reducing inventory and train others on the aspects of the system and how it works.
  • Coordinates design and documentation for packaging requirements working with drafting, inventory and shipping departments, other internal groups, and vendors
  • Works with internal cross-functional teams to determine make vs buy, identify new potential vendors, select appropriate vendors for parts and kits, standardize technical portion of vendor audits, develop relationships with vendors to understand capabilities, and ensure designs are not limited to a single source product or vendor.
  • Assists Operations, Manufacturing and Shipping teams to design jigs, fixtures and processes for manufacturing and packaging among all Telecom product groups as requested.
  • Recommends/implements design changes for reduction in production cycle times, optimal cost efficiency, universal component use and ease of assembly.
  • Support development and implementation of manufacturing processes and procedures to improve efficiency, reduce costs and enhance product quality
  • Identify internal process improvement opportunities and work with cross-functional teams to develop and implement solutions.
  • Evaluates customer design specifications and assures compliance throughout development cycle
  • Assist with creation and implementation of virtual documentation and step-by-step videos for products to reduce/eliminate amount of paper and printouts required for shipping and installation documentation.
  • Coordinates testing required by customers and/or industry for product approvals and work with internal teams to develop test procedures and design fixtures for testing
  • Research new materials and applicability for use in current and future designs
  • Demonstrates technical product knowledge, design configurations, concepts and limitations and quality processes
  • Acquires knowledge and assures adherence to all Sabre procedures and policy for engineering, production, tracking and follow-up
  • Travels with overnight stays to customer and vendor locations as needed
  • Support sales teams and attend customer meetings, trade shows and conferences
  • Communicates real time updates to Sr Engineer and VP Engineering Solutions
  • Report for work on time and fulfill your shift responsibilities as planned.
  • Complete all responsibilities during your assigned shift as outlined in the schedule.

Position Requirements:

Education: Bachelors degree in Structural or Mechanical Engineering or closely related field (required)

Experience:

  • 1-2 years of design experience, with FEA and/or Thermal Analysis experience preferred.
  • 1-2 years of design for manufacturing preferred.
  • 1-2 years of telecom industry experience preferred.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • Knowledge and proficient use of SolidWorks 3D design software. Preferably 3 years min experience.
  • Proficiency in creating drawings for manufacturability
  • Familiarity with other CAD systems is desired
  • Knowledge and proficient use of Microsoft Office applications
  • Knowledge of welding and annotating welds in drawings desirable
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in sheet metal cabinet construction, tubular steel, and pole construction an asset
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, tooling, and assembly is preferred. Hands on experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of documentation for packaging, shipping, procurement, or in-field assembly is a plus.
  • Experience with PDM and document control preferred
  • Knowledge and experience evaluating design tradeoffs to achieve the most efficient cost- effective designs.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of technical drawings and models.
  • Telecom experience is a plus, especially the wireless industry
  • Professional and effective English communication skills. Ability to communicate information through speech and in writing to be easily understood by all personnel, internal and external. Must maintain a level of confidentiality.
  • Must work well in a fast-paced R&D team environment but also thrive in an entrepreneurial environment, where independent critical thinking and quick execution is valued
  • Must be coachable and flexible to meet the demands of the telecom industry
  • Self-starter; can be depended on to complete tasks under minimal supervision
  • Must be focused, versatile, dependable, multi-task oriented, flexible, and able to adapt effectively to challenges
  • Ability to stay abreast of industry trends, best practice, and customer standards
  • Must have excellent organizational skills, follow-up, follow-through, and strong attention to detail
  • Must have a current, valid driver's license and meet Sabre's vehicle insurability requirements
  • Regular and timely attendance is required

Physical Requirements:

  • Position works primarily in an office environment; however, occasionally required to travel to customer and vendor locations
  • Ability to use hand tools for light assembly/modification of test and prototype articles for third party or in-house lab work.
  • Position requires working on a computer, phone and with general office equipment
  • Regularly required to use hands to work on the computer, finger, handle, or grasp, reach with hands and arms
  • Must have the ability to concentrate on tasks for long periods of time and be able to observe and receive information from all relevant sources
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Distant Vision: must be 20/40 corrected or uncorrected bilaterally
