Job Summary:
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. They are seeking a postdoctoral research associate in machine learning for scientific visualization to work on developing agentic workflows and optimizing scientific visualizations.
Responsibilities:
• Come join the brightest minds at the most innovative R&D facility supporting our national security!
• As the postdoc, you will work in conjunction with a small team of Ph.D. staff scientists as part of a research project focused on building agentic workflows that are able to generate, evaluate, and optimize scientific visualizations.
• This project will develop a domain-specific language (DSL), multimodal knowledge graphs, and an AI model of human perception to make the visualizations reliable, explainable, and human interpretable.
• You should have a strong publication record, an open mind to explore boundaries of scientific fields, and ability to effectively communicate with researchers with varied backgrounds.
• As the postdoctoral research associate, you would be expected to publish results of the work in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present at well-known conferences.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Expertise in data science and/or machine learning with direct experience using deep neural networks, convolutional neural networks, transformers and/or diffusion models
• Experience with python programming and machine learning frameworks for neural networks such as PyTorch or JAX/Flax
• Strong track record of peer-reviewed publications within computer science, data science, machine learning, visualization, or related disciplines
• Good presentation, oral, and written communication skills
• Ph.D. in machine learning, mathematics, computer science, data science, or a related discipline completed within the last 5 years. Applications from candidates who will earn their degree by the time of appointment are accepted.
Preferred:
• Experience developing advanced AI/ML systems, including agentic workflows, large language models (LLMs), and neural network architectures
• Experience in visual and perceptual computing, such as scientific visualization, computer vision, image processing, multimodal knowledge graphs, or neural radiance fields (NeRFs)
• Demonstrated experience in interdisciplinary science, especially in the areas mentioned above
