What does a Science Sales Representative do?

A Science Sales Representative is responsible for selling scientific products and services, such as laboratory equipment, chemicals, or research instruments, to businesses, educational institutions, and healthcare organizations. They use their knowledge of science to understand clients’ needs, recommend suitable products, and provide technical support. Science Sales Representatives often visit client sites, deliver presentations, negotiate contracts, and maintain relationships to ensure customer satisfaction and repeat business.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Science Sales Representative, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Science Sales Representative, you generally need a background in life sciences or chemistry, strong sales acumen, and a bachelor's degree in a related field. Familiarity with CRM software, laboratory equipment, and scientific product catalogs is typically required, and sales certifications can be advantageous. Outstanding communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills help you connect with clients and address their unique scientific needs. These skills and qualities are vital for effectively bridging the gap between scientific products and customer requirements, ultimately driving sales and fostering long-term partnerships.

What are some common challenges faced by Science Sales Representatives when working with clients in technical fields?

Science Sales Representatives often encounter the challenge of conveying complex scientific information in a way that is accessible and relevant to clients who may have varying levels of technical expertise. Building trust with clients requires staying up-to-date on industry advancements and understanding the specific applications of products in research or industrial settings. Job description

Outside Sales Representative

Open Doors, Build Partnerships, Grow Revenue

Why This Role Matters
Labs don't switch suppliers on a whim. They need a reason to trust you, and they need someone who understands their work. As our Outside Sales Representative, you'll be the face of Filtrous in the fieldbuilding relationships with lab managers, procurement teams, and researchers who need a supplier they can count on. You'll prospect new accounts, grow existing ones, and deliver the kind of consultative sales experience that turns one-time orders into long-term partnerships. Your territory, your pipeline, your impact on our growth.

What You'll Do
Build and Own Customer Relationships: Develop strong relationships with existing and prospective customers. Serve as their primary point of contact, understand their needs, and keep HubSpot CRM updated with contact info, notes, and deal flow.
Prospect and Generate New Business: Identify and pursue new opportunities through market research, cold calling (~20 new contacts per day or 4 outside visits per day), and strategic prospecting to expand our customer base.
Deliver Compelling Sales Presentations: Tailor presentations to each customer's specific needs and challenges. Demonstrate how Filtrous products solve real problems and deliver measurable value.
Become a Product Expert: Develop deep knowledge of our laboratory supplies and stay current on industry trends. Provide accurate, consultative guidance that builds credibility and trust.
Close Deals and Hit Targets: Prepare quotations and proposals, negotiate terms, and close sales to achieve revenue targets. Manage orders end-to-end to ensure accuracy and timely delivery.
Deliver Market Intelligence: Stay informed about competitors and market trends. Provide insights and feedback to the sales team to sharpen strategy and identify new opportunities.

Problems You Will Solve
No Face in the Field: Filtrous has no one physically visiting lab managers, procurement teams, and researchers, yet these buyers only switch suppliers once they trust a person they have actually met, leaving the company an anonymous name competing on nothing but price.
New Accounts Have Dried Up: No one is doing the daily prospecting and cold outreach that brings in fresh customers, so the customer base sits flat and the company leans on the same buyers it already has.
Customers Slipping Away Unnoticed: Existing accounts have no dedicated point of contact checking in on them, so labs can quietly drift to a competitor and take repeat revenue the company should have kept.
Sales Forecasts Nobody Can Trust: With customer records and deal notes left out of date, leadership cannot see what revenue is actually coming, turning planning and stock decisions into guesswork.
Flying Blind on Rivals: No one on the ground is reporting what competitors are doing or what labs really want, so sales strategy gets set without any read on how Filtrous stacks up in the market.

How Success is Measured
Meet or exceed quarterly and annual revenue targets
Maintain a healthy pipeline with consistent prospecting activity (20 calls/day or 4 field visits/day)
Achieve high customer retention and satisfaction scores within your territory
Deliver accurate sales forecasts and maintain up-to-date CRM records
Generate new account wins that expand Filtrous's market presence

Why You'll Love It Here
At Filtrous, you're not a cog in a giant sales machine. You'll have real ownership of your territory with the autonomy to build it your way. You'll sell products that scientists actually need, backed by a company that delivers on its promises. Compensation is performance-driven with a 60:40 commission-to-base split, plus bonuses and SPIFFs for extra earning potential. You'll get a car allowance, phone, laptop, and internet stipend. And as Filtrous grows, the opportunity to grow with usinto leadership, into new markets, and into a career you're proud of.

Who You Are
Bachelor's degree in a Life or Physical Science field
35 years of proven experience in scientific sales, preferably in B2B or laboratory supplies
Strong communication, negotiation, and presentation skills
Goal-oriented with a track record of meeting and exceeding sales targets
Proficient with CRM systems and sales analytics tools, specifically HubSpot
Willing and able to travel (approximately 50%)
Bonus points if you have:
Existing relationships in the laboratory supplies market
Experience selling to pharmaceutical, environmental, or clinical diagnostic labs
Background in consultative or solution-based selling
