Job description

Job Summary

As a Cornerstone Chapel employee serving onsite at Cornerstone Christian Academy, the School Security Officer will operate under the general direction of the Cornerstone Chapel Director of Security, the daily direction of the CCA Head of School, and in accordance with the Cornerstone Chapel Articles of Faith. He or she will provide a secure school environment by fostering an atmosphere in which students are safe to grow both academically and spiritually, and by acting as a deterrent to unsafe or poor behavior by patrolling the campus, monitoring student behavior, enforcing school policies, intervening in physical encounters, monitoring security cameras, monitoring visitors, and reporting unsafe or unhealthy conditions. The School Security Officer will monitor the school campus on various shifts to provide security and protection to students, faculty, staff, equipment, and property; maintain campus security and protect school property against vandalism, illegal entry, fire, and theft; and respond to emergency situations.The School Security Officer will also participate in other non-school-related administrative and operational functions as needed, requiring periodic travel to alternative work sites within Loudoun County.He or she will seek to perform all duties as unto the Lord, relying on the Holy Spirit for guidance, completing all tasks with excellence, and prioritizing both the physical and spiritual safety of all CCA students.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Graduation from high school or General Education Development (GED) Certificate or AND an associate's degree (or equivalent college coursework) with an emphasis in Criminal Justice or related coursework

Experience

  • Experience as a law enforcement officer within the past 10 years, having retired or resigned in good standing
  • Three (3) years of experience as a security officer, school security officer, campus supervisor or law enforcement officer and/or the ability to show evidence of successful experience working with students highly desired

Certifications / Licenses

  • Valid Virginia driver's license and a safe driving record
  • Must currently hold or be eligible to obtain DCJS certifications as an Armed School Security Officer
    in accordance with Regulation 6 VAC 20-240
  • CPR and First Aid certifications required within one year of employment
  • Successful completion of a thorough background investigation

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of pertinent sections of the Virginia Education Code, Virginia Penal Code, and CCA Code of Conduct and rules related to assigned duties
  • Able to maintain strict confidentiality concerning CCA and student issues
  • Demonstrated knowledge of school-related security measures and safety procedures, including de-escalation techniques and concepts
  • Ability to think clearly and take quick effective action in an emergency
  • Demonstrated knowledge of investigative techniques and procedures
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable health and safety regulations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and/or training in crowd control procedures
  • Able to operate of a two-way radio systems and knowledgeable in radio communication procedures

Job Functions and Tasks

Essential Functions

  • Patrol and monitor the CCA campus, surrounding areas, and other unsupervised places to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and staff as well as the security of the facility and grounds
  • Display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school
  • Promote student responsibility for behavior and attitude by serving as a role model
  • Intervene in situations likely to result in disruption or injury and direct students to refrain from such conduct
  • Assist with supervision of students during meal periods, morning arrival, andafternoon dismissal
  • In accordance with policy, properly identify visitors to the facility and assist with their visit as warranted
  • Intercept unauthorized individuals and escort off school property
  • Notify CCA administration, Cornerstone Chapel Security, police, and/or appropriate emergency personnel of any emergency, potentially dangerous or unusual situations
  • Notify immediately appropriate CCA personnel, Cornerstone Chapel Security of any evidence of possible substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or other controlled substances
  • Notify immediately appropriate CCA personnel, Cornerstone Chapel Security of any evidence or indicators of potential suicidal tendencies or thoughts from students or others
  • Participate in appropriate in-service training and workshop programs
  • Protect confidentiality of records and information about CCA staff and students and use discretion when sharing any such information within legal confines
  • Adhere to applicable federal statutes and regulations, Virginia law, VA State Education Code rules and regulations, and all CCA policies and procedures
  • Monitor and maintain equipment and facilitate repairs as needed
  • Monitor school parking lot to prevent illegal parking, loitering, and tampering with vehicles
  • Prepare and maintain appropriate records and reports related to security incidents, issues, hazards, and activities
  • Maintain a daily security log
  • As directed, contact parents to coordinate the release of juveniles; serve as a witness in student conferences, disciplinary hearings/proceedings; testify in court and hearings as needed
  • Operate a school vehicle as needed
  • Be proficient in the operation of a variety of security/safety equipment including fire extinguishers, handcuffs, batons, firearms, mobile phones, hand-held radios, and pepper spray
