What is an SBIR part time position?

An SBIR Part Time position typically refers to a role that is funded through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, where an individual works part-time on research and development projects. The SBIR program is a U.S. government initiative that supports small businesses in developing innovative technologies. Part-time roles in SBIR projects allow professionals to contribute specialized skills while having flexibility in their work schedule. These positions are often geared toward researchers, engineers, or consultants who can provide valuable expertise without committing to a full-time schedule. Compensation and work hours vary depending on the specific project and company needs.

What are the typical responsibilities and work schedule for a part-time SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) program coordinator?

As a part-time SBIR program coordinator, you are usually responsible for assisting with grant application processes, tracking deadlines, and supporting communication between research teams and funding agencies. Your schedule often offers flexibility, but you may need to be available during standard business hours for key meetings and submissions. Collaboration with researchers, finance staff, and external partners is common, so strong organizational and communication skills are important. This role provides valuable experience in federal grants administration and project management, which can support advancement to full-time or more senior positions in research administration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) part-time program manager, and why are they important?

Success as an SBIR Part-Time Program Manager requires a solid background in grant writing, project management, and a relevant technical or scientific discipline. Familiarity with SBIR proposal submission platforms, federal grant regulations, and budgeting software is often necessary. Strong communication, organizational skills, and attention to detail help in managing multiple projects and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills ensure effective coordination, compliance, and support for innovative research projects within the SBIR framework.
