What You’ll Do
As a School Nurse, you’ll report to the Manager, School Nurse Program. Provides school health services by managing acute/chronic illnesses, administering medications, performing screenings (vision, hearing, etc.), and providing emergency care to students within the South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC). Works independently in a nontraditional clinical setting, frequently being the only medical professional in the building.
School RN Job Responsibilities
- Conducts health assessments and administer mandatory screenings (vision, dental, hearing, height/weight) for students.
- Collaborates with parents, teachers, and students to discuss health appraisals and recommend follow-up care.
- Delivers care to ill, medically fragile, or injured students by providing first aid, administering medications, and performing specialized medical treatments according to physician instructions and with parental consent.
- Counsels students and families on health conditions, mental health, substance abuse, and healthy lifestyle choices.
- Supports students with chronic illnesses and high-risk conditions (e.g., allergies, asthma, diabetes, seizures) to help them achieve optimal health and functionality.
- Provides emergency medical treatment and assess urgent health situations.
- Assesses and address situations involving student safety, abuse, and other health-related issues, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
- Maintains accurate immunization records and ensure compliance with immunization requirements.
- Promotes a healthy school environment through education on health topics like nutrition, hygiene, and medication management.
- Maintains confidentiality of student health records while adhering to communicable disease control standards.
- Participates in professional development, departmental meetings, and continuing education.
- Supports school events, health fairs, athletic physicals, and flu clinics as needed.
- Acts as a liaison between the school and community health agencies or medical facilities.
- Maintains organized health records, including daily logs, medication administration records, and incident reports.
- Primarily works in a school environment; may travel within the school district.
- May require flexible hours for school events and health emergencies.

You maintain accurate electronic health records, demonstrate proficiency with data entry, word processing, and spreadsheets, and manage multiple databases. You must have a working phone for consistent agency communication.
Required Qualifications
- A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the State of Indiana is required.
- Two years of experience as an RN or LPN is required.
- Previous experience in school nursing, public health, or pediatrics is preferred.
- Must maintain current BLS CPR certification.
