Humboldt Sawmill Company is seeking a Pony Rig Sawyer for Swing Shift (M-F, 3:30pm - 12:15am) to join their team based in Scotia, CA! The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. The Pony Rig Sawyer operates the pony rig, log carriage and conveyor system to saw logs into cants and/or boards in a safe productive manner.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate infeed deck and coordinates with log loader for efficient material flow.
• Scans exposed log surfaces after each cut to determine grade and plan subsequent cuts.
• Operates mechanical log turner to reposition logs on the carriage for continued cut processing.
• Assists with saw changes and basic equipment adjustments as needed.
• Communicates effectively with quad and edger operators to ensure smooth operations.
• Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Performs additional duties or works in other areas as assigned.

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; two to five years of related sawmill or planer experience and/or training preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Basic understanding of timber grading rules preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to read and comprehend written instructions, correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to write simple, clear sentences.
• Basic math skills, including the ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and perform multiplication and division using multiples of 10 and 100.

• This position requires remaining seated for extended periods while visually monitoring logs through a window and operating equipment controls using a joystick with push-button functions to adjust cutting and processing.
• The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl when assisting with saw changes or during equipment changeovers.
• The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, such as when handling wood materials.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration from machinery such as saws, conveyors, and hydraulic systems.
• The employee is frequently exposed to airborne particles, including sawdust, lubricants, fumes, and the risk of electrical shock.
• The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions, as well as high, precarious places including catwalks, scaffolding, and elevated work areas.
• The employee is also exposed to a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow, when working in or around outdoor areas of the facility.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, requiring the consistent use of hearing protection in designated areas.
• The employee is required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as mandated b company policy and OSHA Standards, which may include: Safety glasses or face shields, hearing protection, safety gloves, steel-toe safety footwear, hard hats and respiratory protection if necessary.
