What is a sales rep manager?

Sales Rep Managers are professionals responsible for leading and overseeing a team of sales representatives within an organization. Their primary duties include setting sales targets, coaching team members, monitoring performance, and developing strategies to increase revenue. They also often handle recruiting and training new sales staff, resolving customer issues, and ensuring the team meets or exceeds its goals. Effective Sales Rep Managers possess strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills.

What are some common challenges faced by sales rep managers in leading a diverse sales team?

Sales Rep Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning team members with varying experience levels, adapting to different sales styles, and ensuring consistent communication across the team. Balancing individual coaching with group training, setting clear performance expectations, and maintaining motivation during market fluctuations are also key aspects of the role. Successful managers foster a collaborative environment, leverage each team member's strengths, and implement structured processes to address these challenges effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales rep manager, and why are they important?

Familiarity with CRM software, sales analytics tools, and pipeline management systems is typically required. Outstanding communication, motivational, and conflict resolution skills help build a high-performing and cohesive sales team. These skills are crucial for achieving sales targets, fostering team growth, and maintaining competitive market positioning.

Job description

Territory Sales Representative - West
Drive Growth in a Hands-On, Relationship-Focused Sales Role
Our client, a leader in specialized sign manufacturing components and aluminum extrusion framing systems, is expanding its sales team and seeking a motivated Territory Sales Representative to support growth across the Western United States - ranging from California to Colorado. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys traveling, relationship-building, technical products, and working directly with customers in real-world production environments.
This remote role is highly consultative and education-driven - approximately 75% customer education and 25% traditional selling. You'll spend time demonstrating products in customer workshops, helping fabricators understand product performance, and building long-term partnerships that drive adoption and growth.
The ideal candidate is outgoing, mechanically inclined, coachable, and energized by travel and face-to-face customer interaction.
Territory Coverage
This remote position will support the Western U.S. territory, including:
  • California through Colorado
  • Additional regional coverage as needed throughout the West
Candidates can live anywhere within territory, if they live near a major airport and are comfortable traveling up to 75%.
What You'll Do
  • Manage and grow a defined sales territory through new business development and account expansion
  • Conduct in-person product demonstrations within customer shops and production facilities
  • Educate customers on product applications, performance, and differentiation
  • Build strong relationships with existing customers to increase product usage and adoption
  • Navigate a longer, consultative sales cycle for specialized manufacturing products
  • Collaborate with independent representatives and distributor partners selling complementary materials
  • Represent the company at industry events, trade associations, and customer meetings
  • Identify customer needs and recommend product solutions that improve performance and efficiency
  • Maintain territory activity, account updates, and customer communication through CRM and reporting tools

What We're Looking For
  • 1+ years of sales experience OR relevant hands-on mechanical and / or automotive background
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to understand how products and systems work
  • Comfortable working in industrial, manufacturing, or workshop environments
  • Highly motivated, coachable, and relationship-oriented
  • Ability to quickly learn technical products and confidently demonstrate value to customers
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Bachelor's degree preferred, but not required with relevant experience
Experience in industries such as automotive, manufacturing, industrial sales, construction products, fabrication, or related technical environments is highly valued.
Why Join?
  • Opportunity to represent a respected and growing manufacturing brand
  • Hands-on, relationship-driven sales environment with strong customer interaction
  • Clear path for future growth into Regional Sales Manager opportunities
  • Competitive base salary plus bonus structure
  • Full benefits package including:
    • Health, dental, life, and disability insurance
    • 401(k) with company match
    • Paid holidays and PTO
    • Incentive opportunities tied to performance

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to travel frequently throughout the assigned territory
Comfortable working in industrial and production shop environments
