What is a sales development software?

Sales Development Software is a digital tool designed to help sales teams identify, engage, and nurture potential customers (leads) more efficiently. It automates tasks such as lead generation, outreach, follow-up, and tracking interactions, enabling sales representatives to focus on building relationships and closing deals. These platforms often integrate with CRM systems, provide analytics, and help streamline the sales process to increase productivity and conversion rates.

How does a sales development software role typically interact with sales and marketing teams?

Professionals in Sales Development Software roles often serve as a vital link between the sales and marketing teams. They collaborate closely with marketing to understand campaign goals and messaging, while also working with sales to qualify leads and ensure smooth handoffs. Success in this role often requires clear communication, sharing insights on lead quality, and providing feedback on prospect engagement. This collaborative approach helps optimize the sales funnel and drives more effective outreach strategies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales development representative in software, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sales Development Representative (SDR) in software, you need strong communication skills, a solid understanding of sales processes, and ideally a background in business or technology. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) platforms like Salesforce, sales enablement tools, and sometimes relevant sales certifications are commonly required. Outstanding SDRs excel at active listening, resilience, and time management to build rapport and efficiently qualify leads. These skills and tools are vital for generating high-quality leads, supporting the sales pipeline, and driving revenue growth in a competitive software market.

Job description

About the Role

ITASCA is seeking a dynamic, results-driven General Manager to lead ITASCA Software - our business unit dedicated to the development, marketing, and sale of geomechanical and hydrogeological software. This is a rare opportunity to combine leadership and business acumen with technical depth, driving sustainable growth while building a high-performing, collaborative culture.

The GM holds full P&L ownership and overall responsibility for the operation of ITASCA Software, including finances, business development, and staff, while serving as an external ambassador for the business. With the right leader in place, we expect to double the business over the next three to five years - continuing our shift to subscription-based licensing and expanding into new markets by making our core software more accessible without compromising technical excellence.

This role reports to the CEO of ITASCA International, Inc., partners closely with the CTO, and works hand-in-hand with the Development and Sales & Marketing teams, as well as ITASCA's consulting offices worldwide.

What You'll Do

Leadership & Management

  • Lead technical and supporting staff across software development, marketing, and sales.
  • Own the finances and investments of ITASCA Software.
  • Lead with integrity and fairness, fostering an inclusive, motivated team environment.
  • Continue to drive the transition to a modern, subscription-based licensing strategy and lead the change management it requires.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings, annual performance reviews, and salary discussions; champion professional development.
  • Drive and manage annual KPI goals with all staff, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Build and maintain a positive, high-performing culture across ITASCA.
  • Develop an employee retention strategy and recognize contributions through ITASCA's years-of-service program.
  • Recruit top industry talent to grow and strengthen the team.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legal, financial, and administrative requirements.
  • Report financial performance and provide updates to ITASCA International, Inc. and its Board of Directors.

Business Development, Growth Strategy & Oversight

  • Set strategic direction, including reviewing and updating ITASCA Software's long-term growth strategy.
  • Align technology investments with company goals to strengthen competitiveness.
  • Lead R&D to build new products and services, driving expansion into existing and emerging markets.
  • Provide oversight of sales and marketing to optimize pipeline generation and sales execution.
  • Represent ITASCA Software at industry events, conferences, and workshops.
  • Ensure product delivery meets the highest technical and financial standards.
  • Ensure consulting services' needs are reflected in the software development roadmap.
  • Champion innovation, knowledge sharing, and continuous learning across the team.
This posting summarizes the typical functions of the role and is not a comprehensive list of all responsibilities.

What You Bring

  • Degree in computer science, rock engineering, geomechanics, engineering geology, or a closely related field - or equivalent experience - plus documented business leadership training.
  • Proven business acumen and leadership experience, with strong team development and coaching skills and the ability to inspire others through change.
  • Strong initiative and commitment to technical excellence, with the ability to set strategic vision and bring new software products to market.
  • A lifelong learner who drives a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Experience growing a technology business within an established organization, including leading change management.
  • Experience managing and developing a sales and marketing team.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills; multicultural experience working across levels and geographies.
  • Experience in mining, civil, or energy industries - or consulting experience aligned with ITASCA's core practices - is a plus.
  • Humble with high curiosity: comfortable operating alongside a larger, more established consulting business. Skilled at balancing internal dynamics - assertive enough to lead, diplomatic enough to avoid friction.
  • Comfort with ambiguity - ITASCA is mid-transformation, and this leader will help shape the destination.
  • A track record of personal growth and development.
  • Citizenship or permanent residency in North America.

Why Join ITASCA?

ITASCA is a global, employee-owned engineering consulting and software firm serving the hydrogeological, geomechanics, and engineering geology communities.
