What is a salaried EIR?

A Salaried EIR, or Entrepreneur-in-Residence, is an individual hired by a company, venture capital firm, or incubator on a salaried basis to explore new business ideas, provide industry expertise, or develop new ventures within the organization. This role allows the EIR to work on innovative projects, mentor other entrepreneurs, or identify investment opportunities, all while receiving a steady income. Salaried EIRs often have significant entrepreneurial or industry experience and may transition into leadership roles for new startups or portfolio companies after their residency.

What are the main responsibilities and team dynamics for a salaried EIR at a venture capital firm?

As a Salaried Executive in Residence (EIR) at a venture capital firm, your main responsibilities typically include evaluating potential investment opportunities, supporting portfolio companies with strategic guidance, and occasionally leading new business initiatives. EIRs usually work closely with both the investment team and startup founders, contributing industry expertise and operational insights. The role is highly collaborative, often involving cross-functional teamwork and mentorship, and can serve as a springboard into leadership roles within portfolio companies or a permanent position at the firm. To thrive as a Salaried EIR, you need a strong background in entrepreneurship, business strategy, and market analysis, typically supported by experience in founding or scaling startups. Familiarity with startup tools such as CRM software, financial modeling platforms, and pitch deck creation is often required. Exceptional networking, adaptability, and problem-solving skills help EIRs build relationships, identify opportunities, and drive innovation.
