General Purpose
The City of Idaho Falls is recruiting for the position of Golf Assistant Superintendent.
Performs a variety of skilled duties related to leading and directing crews working in upkeep, construction, maintenance, and beautification of golf course facilities. May be designated responsible for specific sections of the golf course.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of a golf course superintendent.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Provides close supervision to seasonal laborers on projects.
Essential Functions
Assists to Supervise and Train all Golf Maintenance Staff & Communicate with public.
Performs a variety of skilled duties related to leading and directing crews working in upkeep, construction, maintenance, and beautification of golf course facilities.
Communicates and motivates all staff daily and provides details on work assignments, expectations and areas of improvement. Inspects all job assignments for quality of work and completion. Tracks issues with staff and reports to Superintendent as requested.
Serves as lead worker to ensure timely completion of scheduled course maintenance projects.
Communicates and motivates all staff to ensure projects stay on schedule. Inspects all job assignments for quality of work and completion. Follows all City policies and ensures that safety procedures are followed and in place. Reports to Superintendent as requested.
Directs work crews in carrying out duty assignments and provides close supervision to seasonal laborers on projects.
Communicates and motivates all staff daily and provides details on work assignments, expectations and areas of improvement. Inspects all job assignments for quality of work and completion. Follows all City policies on hiring and use Operational manuals and other training aids to help in training all workers; Keep track of employee issues and areas where more training is needed. Reports to Superintendent as requested.
Monitors employee performance, provides training to seasonal work crews through demonstrations especially on equipment, monitors crew activities to ensure safety procedures are adhered to.
Follows all equipment recommendations and ensures that staff is fully aware and of all safety procedures prior to using any equipment. Uses Operational manuals and other training aids to help in training all workers; Keeps track of employee performance with equipment and issue more training sessions as appropriate. Inspects periodically to ensure that employees are exercising proper protocol on equipment. Reports to Superintendent as requested.
Educates staff so they ensure that guests enjoy their golf experience by staff being considerate when doing assigned duties and responsibilities.
Ensures staff is educated on being considerate to the public when doing work processes. Inspect periodically to ensure staff is using good judgement when working around the public. Reports to Superintendent as requested.
Follows and enforces all Maintenance and City policies and procedures at all times.
Ensure that Maintenance and City policies and procedures are available and discussed with all staff members and that they are reviewed as needed. Document all variances to policy as needed and reports to Superintendent as requested.
May be assigned responsibility for designated sections of the golf course by the Head Superintendent.
Follows lead of Head Superintendent with assistance where needed.
Assists to ensure that all turf and landscape are well maintained
Performs semi-skilled grounds construction and maintenance work as related to golf course operations; responsible for installation and maintenance of sprinkler systems; assists in selection of line sizes, sprinkler spacing, type and control equipment.
Appraises irrigation system results daily and informs Head Superintendent of all flaws and issues. Performs irrigation projects improvements and repairs as needed along with arranging for staff to help with needed repairs. Ensures all irrigation system repairs are completed within code and by certified irrigation professionals if required and reports all results to Head Superintendent when completed.
Responsible for the care and maintenance of golf course; participates in the construction of course greens, tees, and fairways; may relocate holes, bunkers, and tees; performs daily assessment of condition, health and playability of the course; supervises and performs the mowing, verticuting, aerifying, watering and maintenance of tees, greens, fairways and related areas; performs tree trimming; planting, fertilizing, and maintenance of turf.
Works with Head Superintendent to schedule all projects. Sets expectations and work assignments for staff daily and inspects results. Ensures turf conditions are within recommended heights, condition, and completed to plan. Reports to Superintendent on areas where employees are not meeting expectations and need more training.
Observes general condition of golf course grounds and facilities; may assist with the maintenance of MSDS sheets on various chemicals to ensure compliance with related regulations; reports areas needing attention to supervisor.
Reviews and communicates daily with Head Superintendent and staff on general condition of the course and areas that need improvement as necessary. Consults with Head Superintendent on recommended chemical applications based on soil and turf tests. Ensures that all Chemicals are applied safely and in accordance with the federal, state, and local guidelines.
Performs seasonal duties such as winterizing sprinkler systems to avoid freezing, flushes watering systems in spring, and repairs other equipment and facilities; assists with tree trimming and removal; may operate snow plow.
Consults with Head Superintendent on winterizing irrigation system each year. Recommends tree removal and trimming as necessary. Operates snow plow in winter months to keep entrance ways and areas open for emergency vehicle access to buildings, etc. Sets work assignments for staff on these repairs and projects as needed and inspects results. Ensures all tree and associated work is completed within code and follows all safety guidelines.
Assists to ensure that all buildings and facilities are well maintained
Helps repair, clean and maintain restrooms and other areas at the golf course to ensure effective operations.
Performs cleaning and minor repairs and adjustments in accordance with recommendations, guidelines, and codes. Uses staff as necessary to help. Works with the Building Maintenance Department to schedule repairs and remodels that require their expertise. Reports to Superintendent as requested.
Assists to ensure that all equipment is working properly and safely
Operates various types of golf course construction and maintenance equipment essential to task completion; performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on machinery and equipment; keeps daily journal of general golf course maintenance activities.
Inspects and certifies that all equipment is in working condition and within recommended safety guidelines daily. Documents all golf course maintenance activities to equipment as required. Schedules repair as needed. Works with the City Garage to schedule equipment breakdown service and required service intervals for all equipment and performs and directs minor repairs and adjustments as needed in accordance with equipment recommendations and guidelines. Reports to Superintendent as requested.
Assists in Preparing all golf related reports and future planning ideas as requested
Helps Head Superintendent prepare any requested reports and recommendations for future operations.
Compiles and updates Head Superintendent of all maintenance reports; keeps copies of reports for informational purposes and sends monthly and year end reports to Head Superintendent as requested.
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Education and Experience:
A. Graduation with an Associates Degree in Turf Management or Plant Science;
AND
B. Two (2) years experience in construction, maintenance, upkeep, and beautification of golf course facilities or four (4) years of seasonal golf course experience;
OR
C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of turf and greens management; landscape and sprinkler system design; herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and pesticides and proper application of the same; safety precautions in the effective application of herbicide, fungicide, etc., on greens and other related areas on the golf course care used in tree and sod removal and transplanting; landscape design and ground preparation; design, adjustment, operation, light maintenance and routine repair of diversified mechanical and electrical equipment.
Skill in the operation of various types of light equipment such as gang mower, front end loader, tractor, backhoe, etc. in trimming golf course greens, aprons, tees, and use of a variety of hand and power tools.
Ability to organize and direct the work of a crew performing similar duties; ability to evaluate work projects for efficiency and effectiveness; ability to work in outdoors under all weather extremes; ability to perform strenuous physical labor; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
3. Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid Idaho driver's license.
Must hold or be able to obtain, within six (6) months, a valid Idaho State Public Pest Control and Herbicide Applicators License.

Exposure to weather, environmental hazards and dangers resulting from working around dangerous equipment. Mental application utilizes memory for details, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving.
