What You'll Do
As Director of Safety, you'll provide leadership for:
- Transportation Safety & FMCSA Compliance
- Enterprise Risk Management
- OSHA & Occupational Safety
- Insurance Claims & Loss Prevention
- Accident Investigation & Crisis Response
- Workers' Compensation Programs
- Safety Training & Leadership Development
- Compliance Audits & Regulatory Readiness
- Safety Technology & Analytics
- Continuous Improvement Initiatives
You'll lead a team of safety, compliance, and risk professionals while working closely with Operations, Human Resources, Maintenance, Finance, and company leadership to strengthen our safety culture and support our continued growth. The role includes responsibility for transportation safety, enterprise risk management, accident response, training, regulatory compliance, and cross-functional collaboration.
What We're Looking For
The successful candidate will bring:
- 10+ years of progressive safety leadership experience
- Experience leading safety programs within the transportation or logistics industry
- Extensive knowledge of FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, Workers' Compensation, accident investigation, and insurance claims
- Strong communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills
- The ability to make sound decisions in fast-paced and high-pressure situations
- A passion for coaching others and building a proactive safety culture
Preferred qualifications include a CDL, Certified Director of Safety (CDS), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), or Certified Risk Manager (CRM), as well as experience working with insurance carriers, brokers, and transportation litigation.

Schedule & Travel
This position is based in Byron Center, Michigan and requires regular travel throughout the United States and Canada.
Normal work hours are Monday through Friday. Because Martin Transportation Systems operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, this role also participates in the company's on-call response for serious accidents and critical incidents involving company personnel, the public or equipment.
