Job description

  • Position Summary
    • The Safety/Hazmat Officer will actively participate in operations which supports, employee safety, fire and life safety, and hazardous material and waste. Some of the operations include but not limited to: safety related committees, EOC rounding, emergency preparedness exercises, safety education, internal safety communications, inspections and audits, safety program evaluation and improvement. Ensures applicable life safety codes, policies, and procedures are implemented and enforced. Communicate to hospital staff and contractors of the programs, policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies.  

      Must be highly organized and ability to maintain proper productivity and work flow for multiple projects. Must be a team player and able to maintain cooperative working relationships. Demonstrates sensitivity to and respect for a diverse population.

      The Safety/Hazmat Officer shall perform Environmental Health and Safety functions, on an as needed basis, based on professional judgment and as directed by the manager/director.

      Performs secretarial, clerical and administrative services for the Plant Operations Department and Director. May also be assigned other duties as needed.

    • Adheres to regulations regarding safe handling of hazardous materials such as Exposure Control and Chemical Hygiene Plans.  Maintains a clean work area to diminish the possibility of contamination.
    • Identifies risk, implement proactive programs to address risk and continuously monitor results to sustain patient safety; includes but not limited to safety data sheets (SDS), eye wash and shower stations.
    • Responds to requests to assist in Incident Command situations, and management, duress alarms, hazardous material/waste spills.
    • Coordinates and performs testing, inspection and repair activities of the Life Safety Systems (NFPA-101) with vendors.
    • Collaborates with Safety and Emergency Management, Facilities, and Project, Design and Construction departments to provide standard and/or unique approaches to ensure compliance.
    • Follows up on failures, ensuring ILSM and repairs are coordinated/completed and documented correctly.
