Safety & Compliance Manager | Multi-Site Leadership Role

Owen Industries (OII) – Carter Lake, IA (Omaha Metro) | Full-Time | Exempt | Mon–Fri


Lead Safety Culture Across a Multi-Division Steel Manufacturing Organization.

Owen Industries is a decades-long leader in the steel industry — and we're looking for a Safety and Compliance Manager who is ready to own our safety programs across multiple manufacturing sites. This is a high-visibility, high-impact role reporting directly to the HR Director, with responsibility for developing, implementing, and driving safety and regulatory compliance across our entire organization.

The Details
  • Location: Carter Lake, IA (Near Downtown Omaha) — primary base
  • Travel: Occasional travel to facilities in Sioux City, IA | Fargo, ND | Wahoo, NE
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, standard business hours with flexibility as needed
  • Reports to: HR Director

What You'll Do

Program Development & Implementation

  • Develop, implement, and continuously monitor comprehensive safety and compliance programs across all Owen Industries manufacturing sites
  • Maintain and update safety documentation, policies, and procedures to align with current regulations and industry best practices

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure adherence to OSHA, EPA, DOT, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies, external audits, and compliance reviews

Risk Assessment & Incident Management

  • Conduct regular audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure corrective actions are implemented promptly
  • Lead investigations of accidents and near-miss incidents, perform root cause analysis, and drive corrective and preventive action to closure

Training & Culture

  • Design and deliver safety training programs for employees, supervisors, and leadership at all levels
  • Champion a proactive safety culture through effective communication, recognition programs, and meaningful employee involvement initiatives

Performance Monitoring & Reporting

  • Track, analyze, and report safety performance metrics to senior leadership
  • Recommend and implement data-driven improvement strategies based on trends and outcomes

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Partner with plant and local leadership to integrate safety practices into daily operations and continuous improvement processes
  • Lead and participate in cross-functional safety committees and company-wide initiatives

Emergency Preparedness

  • Oversee emergency response planning and coordinate regular drills across all locations

What We're Looking For
  • 3 - 5 years of safety and compliance experience in a manufacturing environment — multi-site experience strongly preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Engineering, or a related field; equivalent experience considered
  • Deep working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other applicable safety regulations
  • Professional certifications (CSP, CIH, CHMM, or equivalent) strongly preferred
  • Proven track record of building and sustaining safety programs that produce measurable results
  • Strong leadership presence — you can influence plant floor employees and senior leadership alike
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills — written, verbal, and in front of a group
  • Comfortable with occasional travel to multi-state facilities
  • Data-driven mindset with demonstrated success executing strategic safety initiatives
  • A self-starter who takes ownership, stands behind decisions, and doesn't wait to be told what needs to be fixed
