What is a SaaS revenue accountant?

A SaaS Revenue Accountant is a financial professional responsible for managing and reporting revenue for companies that provide Software as a Service (SaaS). They ensure revenue recognition aligns with accounting standards such as ASC 606, handle billing and subscription complexities, and collaborate with sales, legal, and operations teams to ensure accurate financial reporting. Their work is essential for compliance, forecasting, and supporting business decisions in the SaaS industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SaaS revenue accountant?

To thrive as a SaaS Revenue Accountant, you need a solid background in accounting principles, revenue recognition (especially ASC 606), and a relevant degree such as a Bachelor’s in Accounting or Finance. Familiarity with ERP systems like NetSuite, revenue automation tools, and advanced Excel skills are typically required, and a CPA certification is often preferred. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for interpreting complex contracts and collaborating across departments. These competencies ensure accurate financial reporting, compliance, and support informed business decisions in the fast-evolving SaaS industry.

How does a SaaS revenue accountant typically collaborate with other departments, such as Sales and Customer Success, to ensure accurate revenue recognition?

A SaaS Revenue Accountant works closely with Sales and Customer Success teams to review contracts, amendments, and billing terms to ensure revenue is recognized in compliance with ASC 606 and company policies. Regular communication is essential to clarify contract modifications and understand the timing of deliverables or customer acceptance. These collaborations help identify potential revenue recognition issues early, allowing for timely adjustments and accurate financial reporting. This cross-functional teamwork is a key part of the role, as it ensures that accounting records reflect the true economic substance of transactions.

About the Role

Abnormal AI is looking for a Senior Revenue Accountant to join our Accounting team, reporting to Crystal He. In this role, you will own key areas of the revenue close process, preparing and reviewing audit-ready reconciliations, workpapers, journal entries, and analyses that support monthly close, financial reporting, and external audit requirements. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accountant to gain meaningful ownership and exposure to technical revenue accounting in a high-growth SaaS environment, while partnering closely with experienced revenue and technical accounting professionals. The ideal candidate operates independently, exercises strong judgment, and is motivated to strengthen how revenue accounting operates by standardizing processes, enhancing controls, and leveraging automation and AI-enabled workflows to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.

What You Will Do
  • Own the preparation and review of monthly revenue-related reconciliations, rollforwards, and supporting schedules
  • Prepare and review journal entries and flux analyses for revenue, deferred revenue, accounts receivable, commissions, and other related accounts
  • Maintain complete, audit-ready documentation for recurring close activities, including organized workpapers, reconciliations, and supporting evidence
  • Lead assigned revenue close deliverables, ensuring work is completed accurately, timely, and in accordance with established policies and controls
  • Investigate and resolve accounting issues, unusual items, and reconciling differences in partnership with cross-functional stakeholders
  • Support external audits by preparing support, coordinating requests, responding to inquiries, and documenting accounting positions
  • Partner with Deal Desk, FP&A, Legal, and other teams to resolve operational issues and improve upstream process quality
  • Identify and drive opportunities to streamline close activities through standardization, automation, and AI-enabled workflows
Must Haves
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 4+ years of progressive accounting, audit, or related finance experience
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, with experience applying revenue recognition guidance and related accounting principles
  • Demonstrated experience owning or leading recurring close activities, reconciliations, and financial analyses in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical skills with excellent attention to detail, and the ability to identify issues, evaluate root causes, and implement solutions with limited oversight
  • Advanced Excel skills, including reconciliations, lookups, and analysis of large datasets
Nice to Have
  • Experience applying ASC 606 and ASC 340-40 in a SaaS revenue accounting environment
  • Experience at a Big Four public accounting firm, a high-growth pre-IPO company, or a publicly traded technology company
  • Experience with ERP, billing, and close-management systems such as NetSuite, Salesforce, Maxio, or FloQast
  • CPA license (or active progress toward CPA) and interest in leveraging AI and automation to improve accounting processes
