Job description

Apave America Inc. is currently seeking experienced RT Weld Quality & Profile Level II Technicians for nested positions in the Brownsville, TX area. Must have at a minimum a State Card and Trainer/Instructor Status. This is a multi-year assignment with overtime and per-diem if eligible.
Position Overview:
The NDT Level II (Non-Destructive Testing) Technician is a skilled professional who independently performs inspections on materials and components using various NDT methods like Radiography Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UTT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), or Penetrant Testing (PT), to detect flaws or defects while adhering to established standards and procedures, interpreting results, and documenting findings in detailed reports; essentially acting as a quality control inspector with advanced NDT knowledge and certification to work autonomously on complex projects.
In this role, the NDT Level II RT Technician must have sufficient technical knowledge and skills to be qualified to set up and calibrate equipment and to interpret and evaluate results with respect to applicable codes, standards, and specifications. The RT Level II must be thoroughly familiar with the scope and limitations of the methods for which qualified and shall exercise assigned responsibility for on-the-job training and guidance of trainees and RT Level I personnel. The RT Level II must be able to organize, and report results of NDT tests.
Key responsibilities of a Level II NDT Technician:
  • Performing NDT inspections:

Setting up and calibrating NDT equipment, conducting tests using assigned NDT methods, interpreting test data, and identifying defects according to relevant codes and standards.
  • Technical expertise:

Understanding the limitations of different NDT techniques, selecting appropriate methods for specific applications, and applying proper testing procedures.
  • Training & Mentoring:

Guiding trainees and RT Level I personnel through on-the-job training and ensuring quality of inspections.
  • Data analysis and reporting:

Accurately documenting inspection results, including detailed reports with clear descriptions of findings, photographs, and recommendations.
  • Compliance with standards:

Adhering to industry standards such as ASNT (American Society for Nondestructive Testing) guidelines, applicable codes, and client specifications.
  • Quality control:

Ensuring the accuracy and reliability of NDT inspections by performing quality checks and maintaining proper equipment calibration.
  • Communication and collaboration:

Interacting with engineers, quality inspectors, and other personnel to discuss inspection requirements, findings, and potential corrective actions.
  • Safety practices:

Following safety protocols and procedures while working in various environments, including confined spaces or at heights.
Requirements for a Level II NDT Technician:
  • ASNT Level II certification:

Must hold a valid Level II NDT certification in the specific method(s) they will be using (e.g., RT, UTT/UT, MT, PT).
  • Technical knowledge:

Thorough understanding of NDT principles, equipment operation, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Practical experience:

Required Skills and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • Additional SNT Level II certifications in MT/PT/UTT/PMI will be considered an asset.
  • Must be capable of training Assistant and Level I Radiographers.
  • Weld Quality RT and Profile RT experience required.
  • Must provide proof of classroom training hours in RT/MT/PT/UTT/PMI.
  • Must have 40 hours of Radiation Safety Training.
  • Must be capable of following verbal and written instructions.
  • Current SPRAT and/or IRATA Rope Access certification will be considered an asset.
  • Valid Driver's License and pre-access drug and alcohol testing required.
  • Pre-employment background checks will be required.
  • Valid TWIC Card required.

Physical Requirements:
  • Move, carry, and lift objects 50 lbs. repetitively.
  • Must be able to walk, stand, bend, reach, and climb.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces and at heights, including climbing tanks, ladders, scaffolding, towers, piping systems, catwalks, structural steel, and wind turbines.
  • Remain constantly active throughout shift.
  • Vision abilities: close vision, distance vision.
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work at heights and confined spaces for long periods of time.
