Special Note: Must be at least 18 years of age.Position Summary:Under the mentorship of existing staff, the position provides an opportunity to an individual to obtain a hands on introduction to the broadcast industry, including the production of programming, which will qualify such individual with the basic knowledge base for an entry level position with Hewel Ni'ok Network, managers and operators of the Tohono O'odham Nation's licensed radio stations.The work is normally reviewed upon completion to ensure compliance with general organization/department goals, policies and procedures. Major work activities are covered by procedures or guidelines permitting flexibility in selecting methods to utilize and procedures to follow, determination of work priorities, and the planning and coordination of projects.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:• Audit and edit music proposed for air play, which may include researching lyrics and other information to assure compliance with FCC and federal copyright laws.• Produce assigned programming projects through researching topics and interviewing persons knowledgeable of assigned subjects.• Assists in developing audio loops, music beds, promotional themes and branding for the O'odham Youth Media web channel.• Assist staff on remote by setting up equipment and related temporary space; engaging with the public in a presentable and courteous manner; and maintaining a safe environment during the remote.• When directed, provide reception services to the general public at either the Main Studio located in Covered Wells or the KWAK-LP Studio located in San Xavier.• Conduct voice overs for pre-selected programming as well as public service announcements and community events.• Assist in the preparation of mailings, public information packets, including monthly service reports generated by staff.• Acts as on-air host of assigned programming.• Observes the general administration of the studios and assist staff with general administrative tasks as requested.• Obtain a general basic knowledge of audio processing through the application of multi-track digital recording; use of digital audio recorders and audio editing.• Travels within assigned work area.• Represents Hewel Ni'ok and the O'odham Youth Media in a positive and professional manner.• Any other work deemed necessary in accomplishing the above related tasks and to qualify the intern for future employment in the broadcast industry.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:• Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.• General Knowledge of music genres popular with the age group of 14-25.• Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.• Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.• Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.• Ability to exercise independent judgment.• Ability to plan, assign, and review the work of assigned volunteers.• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.• Ability to travel within assigned work area, as needed.• Ability to work with and motivate team members.• Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.• Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.• Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules to include holidays and weekends.Minimum Qualifications:High School Diploma or General Education Diploma, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:• Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.• May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).• If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.• Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.Physical Demands:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
