What is a ROV Engineer job?

A ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) Engineer is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and troubleshooting of underwater robotic systems used in offshore industries such as oil and gas, marine research, and subsea exploration. They ensure that ROVs function correctly by conducting pre-dive checks, repairs, and upgrades. ROV Engineers work both offshore and onshore, collaborating with pilots, technicians, and project teams to complete underwater tasks efficiently and safely. Strong technical skills in electronics, hydraulics, and mechanics are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Rov Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ROV Engineer, you need a solid understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, often supported by a degree in engineering or significant technical experience. Familiarity with Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) piloting, subsea tools, and certifications such as IMCA ROV qualifications or BOSIET are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you excel in dynamic offshore environments. These competencies ensure safe, efficient operation and maintenance of ROVs in challenging subsea conditions.

What are typical work environments and schedules like for ROV Engineers?

ROV Engineers most often work offshore on vessels or oil rigs, where they oversee the deployment, operation, and maintenance of remote-operated vehicles and associated equipment. Schedules commonly follow a rotational pattern, such as two weeks on and two weeks off, which can involve long shifts while at sea. The position involves close collaboration with ROV pilots, mechanical technicians, project managers, and sometimes client representatives. Work environments can be challenging, including confined spaces and variable weather conditions, so adaptability and strong safety awareness are vital. Despite the demands, many ROV Engineers enjoy the camaraderie of close-knit crews and the unique, hands-on nature of the job.
