How much do routing and switching jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for routing and switching in the United States is $109,040.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $89,000.00 and $133,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is routing and switching?

Routing and switching are fundamental functions in networking, with routing directing data packets between different networks and switching managing data transfer within a local network. Professionals in this field configure and troubleshoot routers and switches, often using protocols like OSPF or VLANs, and may pursue certifications such as Cisco CCNA to demonstrate expertise.

What are Routing and Switching jobs?

Routing and Switching jobs involve managing and configuring network devices to ensure efficient data flow within and between computer networks. Professionals in this field work with routers, switches, and related technologies to maintain network connectivity, optimize performance, and troubleshoot issues. These roles are critical for organizations that rely on robust and secure communication networks, and they often require knowledge of networking protocols and hardware. Common job titles include Network Engineer, Network Administrator, and Network Technician.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Routing and Switching roles?

Professionals in Routing and Switching often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex network connectivity issues, managing network congestion, and ensuring high availability and security. They must stay updated on rapidly evolving networking technologies and protocols, which require ongoing learning and certification. Additionally, collaborating with cross-functional IT and security teams is essential to maintain network integrity and implement new infrastructure updates seamlessly.

Will AI replace CCNA jobs?

AI is unlikely to fully replace Routing and Switching professionals, as these roles require hands-on skills, troubleshooting, and understanding of complex network environments. Instead, AI tools are expected to augment the work of network engineers, who will need to adapt by developing skills in automation, scripting, and network management. CCNA-certified professionals will continue to be valuable for configuring, maintaining, and securing networks in evolving technological landscapes.

Is network engineering worth IT in 2026?

Routing and switching are core components of network engineering, which remains essential for maintaining and managing enterprise networks. As organizations continue to expand digital infrastructure, demand for skilled network engineers with certifications like CCNA or CCNP is expected to grow, making the field a stable career choice in 2026.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Routing and Switching Network Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Routing and Switching Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking protocols, IP addressing, and strong analytical skills, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Proficiency with tools such as Cisco IOS, Juniper Junos, network analyzers, and certifications like Cisco CCNA or CCNP are typically required. Attention to detail, effective problem-solving, and strong communication skills help you excel in troubleshooting and collaborating with IT teams. These skills ensure reliable network performance, quick issue resolution, and secure, efficient data flow across organizational infrastructure.

What is the difference between Routing And Switching vs Network Technician?

AspectRouting And SwitchingNetwork Technician
CertificationsCCNA, CCNPCompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA
Work EnvironmentData centers, enterprise networksOffice, on-site troubleshooting
Job FocusConfiguring routers and switches, network designInstalling, maintaining, troubleshooting network hardware
Industry UsageTelecommunications, large enterprisesIT support, small to medium businesses

Routing And Switching specialists focus on configuring and managing network hardware like routers and switches, often working in large enterprise or data center environments. Network Technicians handle installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of network hardware across various settings. While both roles require similar certifications and work in networking, Routing And Switching roles tend to be more specialized in network design and configuration.

What is the highest paying networking job?

The highest paying networking jobs typically include senior network architects and engineering managers, who oversee complex network infrastructure and design. These roles often require advanced certifications like CCIE and extensive experience, with salaries reaching six figures or higher depending on the industry and location.
