What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in rock mining, and how can they be managed?

Rock mining professionals often encounter challenges such as working in physically demanding environments, adhering to strict safety regulations, and managing unpredictable geological conditions. Effective communication with team members and regular safety training are essential to minimize risks. Additionally, adapting to advancements in mining technology and environmental sustainability practices is key for long-term career growth in the industry.

What is the difference between Rock Mining vs Quarrying?

AspectRock MiningQuarrying
Work EnvironmentUnderground or open-pit mines extracting rocks and mineralsSurface extraction from quarries for building materials
Common CertificationsMining safety certifications, heavy equipment operationHeavy equipment operation, safety certifications
Industry UsageMining industry, mineral extractionConstruction, building materials industry

Rock Mining involves extracting rocks and minerals from underground or open-pit mines, often for industrial use. Quarrying focuses on surface extraction of rocks like limestone or granite for construction. While both roles require heavy equipment operation and safety certifications, their work environments and industry applications differ significantly.

What are rock miners?

Rock miners are workers who extract rocks, minerals, and other geological materials from the earth, usually at mining sites such as quarries or underground mines. Their work involves drilling, blasting, and transporting materials for use in construction, manufacturing, and other industries. Rock miners must follow strict safety procedures due to the physical demands and potential hazards of the job. They may operate heavy machinery, perform manual labor, and collaborate with geologists and engineers to ensure efficient and safe extraction processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rock Miner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rock Miner, you need physical stamina, knowledge of mining safety protocols, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with heavy machinery, drilling equipment, and safety certifications such as MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) training are typically required. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities help miners adapt to challenging and hazardous environments. These skills and qualities are vital for maintaining safety, efficiency, and productivity in mining operations.

Job description

About Jerritt Canyon

The Jerritt Canyon deposit was discovered in 1972, and the first gold production from the property occurred in 1981. The Jerritt Canyon property contains 30,821 hectares of mining claims located in the mining-friendly state of Nevada. First Majestic acquired the Jerritt Canyon Gold Mine from Sprott Mining Inc. on April 30, 2021. In May 2023, operations were suspended to prioritize exploration and technical studies. Jerritt Canyon is now entering a new phase of evaluation and planning, requiring substantial technical support to advance the work necessary for a potential future restart of operations.

The Opportunity

The Senior Mining Engineer plays a key technical leadership role in supporting underground mine planning, design, and operational optimization at Jerritt Canyon. This position partners closely with Technical Services, Operations, and Geology teams to deliver safe, efficient, and cost-effective mining plans that support both near-term execution and longer-term strategic objectives.

This role requires a strong safety mindset, advanced technical expertise, and the ability to influence cross-functional teams while driving continuous improvement initiatives in a dynamic and evolving operational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support underground mine planning activities, including design, sequencing, scheduling, and optimization of mining operations.
  • Partner with the Operations and Geology teams to develop integrated mine plans aligned with production targets and business objectives.
  • Provide technical leadership in drill and blast design, stope design, and underground sequencing to optimize safety, productivity, and cost performance.
  • Support and contribute to life-of-mine (LOM), long-term, and short-term planning processes, including forecasting, budgeting, and progress tracking.
  • Maintain and actively manage a register of mine planning risks and opportunities, identifying mitigation strategies and value improvement initiatives.
  • Lead or contribute to technical studies and projects, including AFE development, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, and capital project evaluations.
  • Analyze current mining practices and recommend improvements to enhance operational efficiency, productivity, and cost effectiveness.
  • Develop and implement systems, processes, and best practices to improve planning accuracy, reporting, and operational execution.
  • Support budget development and tracking, including cost forecasting and variance analysis.
  • Prepare and present technical reports, plans, and recommendations to site leadership and stakeholders.
  • Ensure all engineering deliverables meet required standards and are fit for purpose to support safe and effective operations.
  • Foster strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including operations personnel and contractors.
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement opportunities across mine planning, design, and execution.

The above duties and responsibilities are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all-inclusive.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 5-10+ years of progressive experience in underground mining engineering, with strong exposure to mine planning, design, and operations.
  • Experience in conventional underground hard rock mining, preferably in gold operations.
  • Demonstrated experience in mine design, production scheduling (strategic and tactical), equipment selection, and economic evaluation.
  • Proficiency in mine planning and design software, with experience applying optimization techniques.
  • Knowledge of resource estimation, mineral inventory, and exploration methods is considered an asset.
  • Experience working in complex, multi-mine or multi-process environments preferred.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and 3D visualization skills, with the ability to evaluate technical data and develop sound recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Strong commitment to safety, health, and environmental standards.
