As of Jul 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for robotics lab in the United States is $25.25, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.23 and $27.88 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Robotics Lab, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Robotics Lab, a strong background in robotics engineering, programming (such as Python or C++), and mechatronics, typically supported by a degree in engineering or computer science, is essential. Familiarity with robotics simulation software (like ROS or MATLAB), hardware prototyping tools, and relevant certifications significantly enhance effectiveness. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, teamwork, and communication skills help individuals excel in collaborative research and development environments. These skills and qualities are critical for driving innovation, ensuring precise experimentation, and achieving project goals in the fast-evolving robotics field.

What is a Robotics Lab?

A Robotics Lab is a specialized facility where research, design, development, and testing of robots and robotic systems take place. These labs are equipped with advanced tools, software, and hardware to support experimentation in areas such as automation, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and sensor integration. Robotics Labs may be found in universities, research institutions, and technology companies, serving both educational and industrial purposes. They play a crucial role in advancing robotics technology and training the next generation of robotics engineers.

What is the difference between Robotics Lab vs Robotics Engineer?

AspectRobotics LabRobotics Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in robotics, mechanical, electrical, or computer engineeringRequires a degree in similar fields; often includes certifications in robotics or automation
Work EnvironmentResearch facilities, universities, or corporate R&D labsIndustrial settings, manufacturing plants, or technology companies
Industry UsageFocuses on research, development, and testing of robotic systemsDesign, develop, and implement robotic solutions in real-world applications

Robotics Lab roles are primarily research-focused, working in labs to innovate and test new robotic technologies. Robotics Engineers apply these innovations in practical settings, developing functional robotic systems for industry use. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds, their work environments and objectives differ significantly.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in a robotics lab?

Daily responsibilities in a robotics lab often include designing, building, and testing robotic components or systems, as well as troubleshooting hardware and software issues. Team members frequently collaborate with engineers, programmers, and researchers to develop and refine prototypes. Additionally, documenting progress, analyzing data from experiments, and participating in regular team meetings to discuss project updates are common tasks. The work environment is highly collaborative and fast-paced, requiring adaptability and strong communication skills.

Job description

We are seeking a Software Dev Engineer to join the SAF Lab. In this role, you will own the software infrastructure that enables this next-generation safety layer to work universally across different platforms, including dynamically stable robots. You will interface with autonomy stacks, learning-based locomotion and whole-body controllers, sensing and perception, to create hardware abstractions that enable the testing of next-generation safety filters on highly dynamic robotic systems.

As a result, you will be central to the hardware testing and evaluation that will play an essential role in evaluating the research and innovations in the SAF Lab.
Key job responsibilities
Design, implement, and maintain the software integration layer that enables SAF Lab to interface with diverse robot platforms (mobile robots, manipulators, dynamically stable robots)
Build robust abstractions and APIs that decouple the safety layer from platform-specific hardware, enabling rapid deployment across new robot form factors
Collaborate with motion planning, learning, perception, and controls teams to ensure seamless data flow and real-time interfaces between safety systems and autonomy stacks
Have knowledge of running and maintaining robotics hardware, debugging and mitigating hardware testing issues, and evaluating control policies on hardware.
Write high-quality, well-tested, and maintainable code in C++ and/or Python for real-time robotics applications
Define integration testing strategies and build both simulation and hardware validation pipelines to verify safety behavior across platforms
Contribute to system design reviews, technical documentation, and cross-team alignment on interface contracts
Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in real-time safety-critical software paths
