POSITION TYPE: Professional
ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT: WV Schools of Diversion and Transition
EMPLOYMENT TERM: 240 Days
TYPICAL WORK HOURS: Operating hours of host agency, as specified by the school principal.
SALARY: Pursuant to WV Code ยง18A-4-17, salary based on experience and education level per CBOE salary schedule plus competitive benefits package (WVSDT Benefits & Total Rewards) equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation.
JOB SUMMARY: Develop and deliver engaging, hands-on instruction in robotics, engineering principles, automation, programming, and problem-solving. The instructor will prepare students for postsecondary education, industry credentials, and careers in engineering, manufacturing, automation, and related STEM fields.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Plan and deliver instruction in robotics, automation, engineering design, programming, and related technical concepts using engaging, student-centered instructional strategies.
2. Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with applicable state CTE and STEM standards, program objectives, and student learning needs.
3. Provide hands-on laboratory instruction using robotics platforms, automation systems, fabrication tools, and other instructional equipment appropriate to the program curriculum.
4. Teach programming languages and applications relevant to robotics and automation, such as Python, C++, block coding, and PLC programming.
5. Maintain robotics, automation, fabrication, and laboratory equipment; monitor inventory; follow preventive maintenance procedures; and ensure safe, orderly working conditions for students and staff.
6. Assess student progress through classroom activities, projects, performance-based tasks, and other appropriate measures, and provide timely feedback to support student growth.
7. Integrate the engineering design process, problem-solving strategies, and project-based learning experiences that connect classroom instruction to real-world applications.
8. Collaborate with local industry, colleges, community partners, and workforce representatives to support career awareness, work-based learning opportunities, student projects, and alignment with current workforce needs.
9. Maintain required certifications, student records, instructional documentation, reports, and other program-related records in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.
10. Support students in career exploration, employability skill development, industry credential preparation, and transition planning for postsecondary education, training, or employment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
1. Minimum of two years of related industry experience or a bachelor's degree in Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, Technology Education, Industrial Technology, or a related field.
2. Hold or be eligible to obtain valid West Virginia teaching certification appropriate for the assignment.
3. Hold CPT certification or be eligible to obtain CPT certification as required for the position.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of STEM instruction, career and technical education, and project-based instructional practices.
DESIRED:
1. Experience teaching secondary career and technical education, STEM, robotics, automation, engineering, or related courses.
2. Experience with robotics, automation, programming, engineering, or fabrication technologies, including but not limited to:
โข VEX Robotics, FIRST Robotics, Arduino, FANUC robotic arms, PLCs, CAD software, 3D printing, and CNC technologies.
3. Relevant industry certifications in robotics, automation, advanced manufacturing, programming, engineering technology, or a related technical field.
4. Experience sponsoring or coaching robotics teams, student competitions, career and technical student organizations, or related extracurricular activities.

PHYSICAL CAPACITY REQUIREMENTS: The position requires the ability to perform routine office and instructional duties, including sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and using standard office and instructional equipment. The employee must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. The position may require lifting, carrying, and transporting instructional materials, supplies, or equipment weighing up to 35 pounds, and occasionally more with assistance as needed. The position also requires travel to multiple locations, including occasional overnight travel, as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT RELATIONSHIP:
Department of Education staff are employed upon recommendation of the State Superintendent of Schools and are state employees. No representative or employee of the state is authorized to enter into any employment contract or other agreement. Department staff work under the direction of the State Superintendent of Schools for the general supervision of the free schools in the state and implement the policies of the board and other necessary tasks as determined by the State Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee. Each employee is "at-will" and subject to termination by the State Superintendent of Schools at any time, with or without notice, cause or compensation.
The employment relationship between the State Superintendent of Schools and the employee may be terminated by either party. Reasons for termination by the State Superintendent of Schools include, but are not limited to, immorality, incompetency, cruelty, insubordination, intemperance, willful neglect of duty, unsatisfactory performance, the conviction of a felony or a guilty plea or a plea of no contest to a felony charge, misuse of funds or property, violations of law or policies of the state board, lack of need, or a lack or loss of funding.
