What does a Robotics Engineer do?

A Robotics Engineer designs, builds, and tests robots and robotic systems that are able to perform tasks typically done by humans. They work on integrating hardware and software to create machines that can automate processes in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics. Their responsibilities often include researching new technologies, programming robotic systems, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with other engineers. Robotics Engineers play a key role in advancing automation and improving efficiency and safety in various sectors.

What Does a Robotics Engineer Do?

A robotics engineer designs and often builds robots from their plans and ensures the correct processes are in place for the robot to run properly. They work with their clients to determine costs and design specifications, then they design software systems to control robotic systems; build, configure, and test robots; and automate processes to increase production and precision. Once the robotic system is in place, the robotics engineer helps troubleshoot any problems the clients have with the system.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science, typically backed by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or C++, CAD software, and robotics platforms such as ROS (Robot Operating System) is essential. Problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies are crucial for designing, building, and refining innovative robotic systems that meet complex technical and user requirements.

What types of projects do Robotics Engineers typically collaborate on with cross-functional teams?

Robotics Engineers often work closely with professionals from software development, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering to design, build, and test robotic systems. Projects can range from automating manufacturing processes to developing autonomous vehicles or medical robots. Collaboration is essential, as engineers must integrate hardware and software components while ensuring systems meet safety and performance standards. Effective communication and teamwork are key to successfully bringing innovative robotics solutions from concept to reality.

What is the difference between Robotics Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectRobotics EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or related field; certifications in robotics or automationBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license optional
Work EnvironmentDesigning, testing, and programming robotic systems in labs or manufacturing settingsDesigning and analyzing mechanical systems in various industries, including manufacturing, automotive, aerospace
Industry UsageRobotics companies, automation firms, manufacturingManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, product design

Robotics Engineers focus on designing and developing robotic systems, combining knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and software engineering. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, working on mechanical systems across multiple industries. While both roles require engineering degrees, Robotics Engineers often need specialized skills in programming and automation. The choice depends on your interest in robotics and automation versus general mechanical system design.

Job description

Intrinsic is an AI robotics group at Google aiming to reimagine the potential of industrial robotics. Our team believes that advances in AI, perception and simulation will redefine what's possible for industrial robotics in the near future - with software and data at the core.
Our mission is to make industrial robotics intelligent, accessible, and usable for millions more businesses, entrepreneurs, and developers. We are a dynamic team of engineers, roboticists, designers, and technologists who are passionate about unlocking the creative and economic potential of industrial robotics.
Role
As a Frontend Robotics Engineer on our Customer Success team, you will act as the crucial bridge between our core technology and our customers and partners. You will help design, build, and customize Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) that empower our partners to deploy complex robotic automation systems.
In this role, you will take existing reference solutions and customize them for specific customer use cases, adding new features, controls, and 3D visualizations. We are looking for a "T-shaped" developer: an engineer with deep expertise in building web interfaces, coupled with the ability to navigate backend systems in Python and C++. While you will have the support of dedicated backend engineers to build core infrastructure, you should be entirely comfortable navigating backend code to understand and debug data flows, trace API endpoints, and collaborate effectively across the stack. You will need to be familiar with how data travels from hardware to software and have a solid understanding of network systems. Additionally, you will work directly with customers and partners to guide their development and get hands-on with physical robotics hardware to ensure your interfaces work flawlessly in the real world.
How your work moves the mission forward
  • Collaborate directly with customers/partners to understand their specific use cases and customize reference HMIs to meet their product needs.
  • Develop visually rich, user-friendly web applications that allow non-experts to interact with, monitor, and control industrial robotic workcells.
  • Bridge the technical gap for customers by guiding them through frontend development best practices and helping them eventually own their custom HMI services.
  • Integrate complex features, such as real-time 3D visualizations and process data, partnering seamlessly with backend engineers to wire up new data streams.
  • Work hands-on in the lab and in the field with physical robots, hardware, and automation equipment to test and validate your software interfaces.
  • Create and maintain an accessible system of reusable frontend components in collaboration with our Design team.
Skills you will need to be successful
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in frontend web application development and design, with deep expertise in Angular, TypeScript, and Three.js.
  • Experience building visually rich, user-friendly client-side applications that enable complex interactions.
  • Backend Confidence: A strong ability to collaborate with backend teams - you should be comfortable navigating codebases in Go, C++, or Python and understanding data structures to trace data flows and unblock frontend integration tasks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to collaborate directly with customers or external partners.
  • A strong willingness and excitement to work hands-on with physical hardware and robotic systems (no prior robotics experience strictly required, but curiosity is a must).
Skills that will differentiate your candidacy
  • Familiarity with industrial automation, robotics, manufacturing, or human-machine interface (HMI) design.
  • Experience with 3D graphics and visualization libraries in a web context (e.g., WebGL).
  • Familiarity with server-side (Go, C++, gRPC, etc.) software.
  • Previous experience in a Customer Success, Solutions Engineering, Developer Relations, or forward-deployed engineering role.

The base salary for this full-time position is between $147,200 - $200,900 (USD) + 15% bonus + equity + benefits. Your recruiter will share more about the specific salary range + bonus + equity for your targeted location and role during the hiring process.
