Job description

The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and validating mechanical systems and components used in Altec's precision machinery for the veneer and plywood industry. This role involves creating detailed 3D models, engineering drawings, and technical documentation while ensuring that all designs meet performance, safety, and quality standards. Working closely with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, controls, and project management. The Mechanical Design Engineer plays a key role in bringing concepts from design to production, ensuring manufacturability and reliability in every project.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mechanical Design & Development: Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and systems using 3D CAD software such as Inventor and AutoCAD. Create detailed engineering drawings, bill of materials (BOMs), and associated documentation that meet internal standards and customer specifications.
  • Engineering Analysis: Perform design calculations, stress analysis, and tolerance studies to verify performance, safety, and durability of components and assemblies.
  • Material & Process Optimization: Select appropriate materials and manufacturing methods (machining, welding, casting, etc.) to ensure cost-effective, high-quality production and long-term reliability.
  • Collaboration & Integration: Work closely with manufacturing, electrical, and controls teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical and automation systems. Participate in design reviews, problem-solving, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Prototyping & Testing: Support prototype builds, design validation, and testing of new equipment. Identify and resolve any performance or design issues through hands-on troubleshooting and redesign as needed.
