Position Description
The Fuel Truck Driver is responsible for safely transporting and dispensing diesel, gasoline, and other approved fuels and fluids to heavy equipment, trucks, and support vehicles at road construction and asphalt job sites. This role supports daily operations by maintaining fuel availability, completing required inspections and documentation, and following all company, DOT, OSHA, and environmental safety standards.
Position Requirements
- Drive and operate a fuel/service truck safely to and from road construction, paving, grading, milling, and plant job sites.
- Fuel heavy equipment, dump trucks, service vehicles, and other company assets according to approved procedures and daily schedules.
- Load fuel and approved fluids from designated terminals, bulk tanks, or company facilities and verify product type and quantity before departure.
- Perform pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of the truck, pumping system, hoses, nozzles, tanks, lights, tires, brakes, and safety equipment.
- Maintain accurate fuel logs, meter readings, delivery tickets, inspection reports, and other required paperwork or electronic records.
- Follow all DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, EPA, state, local, and company safety requirements for transporting and dispensing fuel.
- Use proper spill prevention, grounding, bonding, overfill prevention, fire safety, and emergency response procedures at all times.
- Monitor fuel inventory levels at job sites and communicate shortages, delivery needs, equipment issues, or safety concerns to dispatch, supervisors, mechanics, or project staff.
- Perform basic service support as assigned, such as checking fluid levels, greasing equipment, and reporting maintenance needs.
- Keep the truck clean, properly stocked, and in safe operating condition; report defects, incidents, or violations immediately.
- Work closely with field crews and supervisors to minimize downtime and support productive, safe operations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Valid Class A or Class B CDL required, based on vehicle assignment and state requirements.
- Tanker endorsement required; Hazmat endorsement strongly preferred or required based on company operations and applicable regulations.
- Current DOT medical card and acceptable motor vehicle record required.
- At least 1 to 3 years of commercial driving experience preferred; fuel delivery or construction industry experience strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of DOT and FMCSA regulations, safe fueling practices, and hazardous material handling procedures.
- Ability to read and complete logs, inspection reports, tickets, and other compliance documentation accurately.
- Basic mechanical aptitude with the ability to identify equipment or vehicle issues and report them promptly.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and communicate professionally with crews, supervisors, and vendors.
- Must pass pre-employment and ongoing drug/alcohol screening, background review, and all job-related safety requirements as applicable.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
This position works primarily outdoors in varying weather and active construction environments. The employee must be able to climb in and out of the truck, walk on uneven ground, lift and move hoses and equipment, bend, stoop, reach, and stand for extended periods. The role may require early mornings, nights, weekends, overtime, and travel between job sites. Use of required personal protective equipment is mandatory.

This role is considered safety-sensitive. The Fuel Truck Driver must follow all company policies and procedures, maintain required licenses and endorsements, and operate in full compliance with applicable transportation and construction safety standards. Availability for flexible scheduling is expected to meet production needs and project timelines.
