RNs in VA healthcare facilities often care for veterans with complex medical and mental health needs, including PTSD and chronic conditions. This can present challenges such as managing multifaceted care plans, navigating VA-specific protocols, and supporting patients with unique emotional backgrounds. Building strong communication skills, staying informed about VA policies, and collaborating closely with interdisciplinary teams are effective ways to prepare for a rewarding experience in this environment.

To thrive as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the VA, you need a valid RN license, a nursing degree, and a solid foundation in clinical care and veteran-specific healthcare needs. Familiarity with VA-specific electronic health record systems (such as CPRS), federal healthcare regulations, and possibly BLS or ACLS certifications is important.
