What is an RN assistant?

RN Assistants, often referred to as Registered Nurse Assistants or Nursing Assistants, are healthcare professionals who support registered nurses (RNs) in providing patient care. Their duties typically include helping patients with daily activities, monitoring vital signs, assisting with medical procedures, and ensuring patient comfort. While they do not have the same responsibilities or qualifications as RNs, RN Assistants play a crucial role in the healthcare team by ensuring efficient and compassionate care for patients. Becoming an RN Assistant usually requires completing a state-approved training program and passing a competency exam.

What does an RN assistant do?

An RN Assistant typically supports registered nurses by assisting with patient care tasks such as monitoring vital signs, helping patients with daily activities, preparing rooms and equipment, and documenting patient information. They often serve as a key communication link between patients, families, and the nursing team. The role may also involve transporting patients, restocking supplies, and ensuring infection control standards are met. These responsibilities provide valuable hands-on experience and insight into the nursing field, making the role a great stepping stone for those considering further nursing education.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RN assistant?

To thrive as an RN Assistant, you need a solid understanding of basic patient care, vital sign monitoring, and support skills, typically requiring a nursing assistant certification (CNA) or similar credential. Familiarity with medical record systems, patient care equipment, and infection control protocols is important. Strong communication, attention to detail, and compassion help RN Assistants effectively support nurses and provide excellent patient experiences. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining patient safety, supporting the healthcare team, and ensuring efficient care delivery.

CNAs: Ready to Leave Facility Work Behind?

RNS Private Duty Care

Job description

CNAs: Ready to Leave Facility Work Behind?
You became a CNA to care for people, not to feel like you're constantly rushing from one resident to the next, working short-staffed, and struggling to give the kind of care you actually want to provide.
At RNS Private Duty Care, we do things differently.
Instead of caring for an entire floor, you can provide one-on-one care in a client's home, allowing you to slow down, build meaningful relationships, and focus on the person in front of you. You'll have the support of a local leadership team and a nurse case manager overseeing your clients, so you're never left to figure things out alone.
If you're a CNA who is tired of facility life and ready for a better way to use your skills, come see what private duty care can look like.
Why CNAs Choose RNS:
  • One-on-one care instead of an entire facility or floor
  • Competitive wages ($19-$22/hr based on experience)
  • Less rushed, more personalized care
  • Work in carefully screened homes and client environments
  • Support from a nurse case manager for every client
  • Locally owned team that knows and values its caregivers
  • Opportunities to build strong relationships with clients and families
  • Opportunities for professional growth, recognition, and advancement
  • Weekday and weekend opportunities available
What You'll Do:
  • Provide compassionate, one-on-one care based on the client's needs and care plan
  • Assist with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility, and transfers
  • Monitor clients and report changes in condition to the appropriate RNS team member
  • Assist with fall prevention and safety monitoring
  • Take and document vital signs as needed
  • Provide medication reminders and other non-medical support
  • Assist with light household tasks and errands as appropriate
  • Provide safe transportation when required
  • Work comfortably in homes with pets when applicable
  • Maintain accurate documentation and follow all RNS policies and procedures
  • Communicate professionally with clients, families, and the RNS care team
What We're Looking For:
  • Current CNA certification
  • High School Diploma
  • Licensed driver with a clean driving record and compliance with RNS safety policies
  • Reliable, insured vehicle
  • Cell phone with internet and texting capabilities
  • Daily access to RNS email
  • Fluent in English
  • Dependable and punctual
  • Compassionate, professional, and comfortable working independently
  • Ability to meet the physical and mental requirements of the role
  • Current CPR certification or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire
  • Current TB test or willingness to complete one within 90 days of hire
Ready for a Change?
If you're a CNA who is burned out by facility work, tired of being stretched too thin, or simply ready for a more personal approach to caregiving, we want to meet you.
Bring your CNA experience to RNS and discover what it feels like to have the time and support to provide the care you went into this profession to give.
Work Authorization:
United States (Required)
