Job description

Position Overview


Skate City in Sioux Falls, SD is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced ice or inline hockey coach/director to lead and grow our NEW inline hockey programs. This position is a hybrid role that will include responsibility for the overall development, management, and success of all inline hockey activities at the rink, including leagues, clinics, camps, tournaments, and instructional programs. Other responsibilities will also include assisting in the business operations of Skate City's roller skating programs and events.


The ideal candidate will be a strong leader, skilled organizer, and passionate advocate for the sport who can create a fun, safe, and competitive environment for players of all ages and skill levels.


Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and oversee all inline hockey programs, including recreational and competitive leagues, youth and adult clinics, skill development sessions, camps, and special events.
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise coaches, officials, and program staff.
  • Create and manage seasonal schedules, game times, practice (or rink time).
  • Ensure all programs comply with safety standards, rink policies, and applicable governing body rules.
  • Coordinate equipment inventory, maintenance, and distribution (sticks, pucks, protective gear, nets, etc.).
  • Promote programs through marketing materials, social media, community outreach, and partnerships to increase participation and retention.
  • Manage program budgets, registration processes, fee collection, and related administrative tasks in coordination with rink management.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive culture that emphasizes skill development, sportsmanship, teamwork, and player safety.
  • Communicate regularly with players, parents, coaches, and rink staff; resolve issues promptly and professionally.
  • Track program performance metrics (enrollment, retention, feedback) and recommend improvements.
  • Maintain a visible presence on the rink floor during key program times and support general rink operations as needed.
Qualifications
  • Proven experience in inline hockey, roller hockey, or ice hockey as a player, coach, or program administrator (minimum 2–3 years preferred).
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays as program schedules require.
  • Knowledge of hockey rules, coaching principles, and player development best practices.
  • Experience managing staff, volunteers, or youth sports programs.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications (email, spreadsheets, registration software).
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain promptly).
  • Must pass a background check and be SafeSport certified.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience directing or coordinating sports programs at a rink or recreation facility.
  • Familiarity with rink operations and facility scheduling.
  • Marketing or customer-service experience in a sports/recreation setting.
