What is an RF performance engineer?

RF Performance Engineers are professionals who specialize in optimizing and maintaining the performance of radio frequency (RF) networks, such as those used in cellular communications. They analyze network data, identify coverage issues, and implement solutions to improve signal quality, capacity, and overall user experience. Their work is critical to ensuring reliable wireless communication by minimizing interference, dropped calls, and data slowdowns. These engineers often use specialized tools to perform drive tests, evaluate network metrics, and collaborate with other teams to design and upgrade network infrastructure.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an RF performance engineer?

To thrive as an RF Performance Engineer, you need a solid understanding of radio frequency theory, wireless communication standards, and typically a degree in electrical or telecommunications engineering. Familiarity with tools like drive test equipment, spectrum analyzers, and software such as TEMS, Actix, or Atoll, as well as relevant certifications (e.g., CWNA), is important. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills are crucial for diagnosing issues and collaborating with teams. These competencies ensure optimal network performance, efficient troubleshooting, and successful deployment of wireless systems.

What are common challenges faced by RF performance engineers when optimizing wireless networks?

RF Performance Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing interference, balancing network coverage with capacity, and ensuring consistent service quality in densely populated or rapidly changing environments. They must analyze large volumes of network performance data, identify root causes of issues, and implement solutions without causing disruptions. Collaboration with field engineers, network planners, and operations teams is essential to address these challenges effectively and to keep up with evolving technologies and user demands.

What is the difference between Rf Performance Engineer vs Rf Test Engineer?

AspectRf Performance EngineerRf Test Engineer
Primary FocusOptimizing RF system performance, analyzing signal quality, and ensuring compliance with standardsConducting RF testing, troubleshooting, and validating hardware and software performance
Required SkillsRF design, performance analysis, testing tools, and signal measurementRF testing procedures, test equipment operation, and defect identification

Job description

Qorvo (Nasdaq: QRVO) supplies innovative semiconductor solutions that make a better world possible. We combine product and technology leadership, systems-level expertise and global manufacturing scale to quickly solve our customers' most complex technical challenges. Qorvo serves multiple high-growth segments of large global markets, including consumer electronics, smart home/IoT, automotive, EVs, battery-powered appliances, network infrastructure, healthcare and aerospace/defense. Visit www.qorvo.com to learn how our innovative team is helping connect, protect and power our planet.
Qorvo is seeking a Staff RF Power Management Systems Engineer to drive product definition and system architecture for next-generation RF power-management solutions used in radar, electronic warfare, satellite communications, aerospace, and high-performance communication systems.
In this role, you will work at the intersection of RF power amplifiers, analog and mixed-signal ICs, power management, and embedded control. You will translate customer and market requirements into scalable product architectures, specifications, system models, and validation plans.
The ideal candidate has experience with GaN or GaAs RF power-amplifier systems and understands the interaction between RF performance, device biasing, power delivery, sequencing, thermal behavior, protection, and system control.
Responsibilities
  • Lead system-level product definition for RF power-management and bias-control solutions
  • Translate customer, application, and market requirements into product specifications and system architectures
  • Define requirements for RF PA biasing, power sequencing, monitoring, protection, pulsed operation, and system control
  • Analyze interactions between RF power amplifiers, bias circuits, power supplies, control electronics, and thermal environments
  • Develop system models and perform tradeoff analyses across efficiency, switching performance, RF performance, thermal behavior, size, and cost
  • Work directly with customers and field teams to understand system challenges and identify broadly applicable product requirements
  • Collaborate with product management, applications, RF engineering, IC design, validation, packaging, test, and manufacturing teams
  • Define system-level validation strategies, evaluation platforms, reference designs, and application demonstrations
  • Support technical feasibility studies, competitive assessments, product roadmaps, and business-case development
  • Lead technical reviews and drive alignment from early concept definition through product validation and customer adoption
  • Identify system risks early and recommend architecture, technology, or implementation changes to reduce development risk
  • Create technical documentation, customer presentations, product requirements, system block diagrams, and validation plans

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 8+ years of experience or an equivalent amount of advanced education and experience.
  • Strong systems engineering experience in RF power amplifiers, power management, analog/mixed-signal electronics, or related high-performance hardware
  • Experience with GaN and/or GaAs RF systems, including PA biasing, power delivery, sequencing, protection, and transient behavior
  • Proven ability to translate customer and system requirements into product specifications, architectures, tradeoff analyses, and validation plans
  • Hands-on experience with system modeling, simulation, laboratory characterization, and cross-functional technical leadership

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field
  • Experience supporting radar, electronic warfare, satellite communications, aerospace, phased-array, or other high-performance RF applications
  • Experience with digital control interfaces, embedded systems, FPGA-based control, automated test environments, or software-defined system control
  • Experience with high-speed power switching, pulsed power delivery, dynamic RF PA power management, or advanced bias-control architectures
  • Familiarity with RF measurements such as output power, gain, efficiency, linearity, EVM, ACLR, harmonics, thermal behavior, and switching transients
  • Experience developing evaluation boards, reference designs, system demos, or customer-facing application platforms
  • Experience supporting products from early concept definition through qualification, production release, and customer adoption
  • Experience with time domain simulation, analog design, and development of complex microwave assemblies

This position requires access to ITAR/EAR technologies. Applicant must be a US Person (US citizen, permanent resident, asylee, or refugee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations.
