What You'll Do

As a Senior RF Test Engineer, you will be a key technical leader responsible for RF product development and validation at SimpliSafe. You help design and build SimpliSafe's RF capabilities in our goal to have the best-in-class wireless connectivity in the industry. You will work closely with the engineering teams to choose chipsets as well as optimize mechanical and electrical designs for RF performance. You will also lead and guide our ODMs design partners in the design, test, and qualification on new products. 

Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain the performance metrics for all wireless protocols (Wi-Fi, BLE, Radar, and Sub-GHz), ensuring they align with product requirements.  
  • Build SimpliSafe's RF testing capabilities including test plans and equipment selection.
  • Lead and audit ODM design partners through the test and qualification phases. Review their test reports with a critical eye to ensure no corner cases are missed.
  • Lead the characterization of wireless chipsets and antenna systems to validate vendor claims and ensure suitability for SimpliSafe's unique hardware constraints.
  • Act as the RF consultant to Electrical and Mechanical teams, validating that board layouts and mechanical enclosures don't degrade RF integrity.
  • Review PRDs, and author RF technical requirements to meet product requirements.
  • Drive the development of automated test scripts to increase validation coverage and repeatability.
  • Root causing RF field related issues.
  • Travel: Willing to travel to our manufacturing partners in China 1-3 times per year

Qualifications:

  • Deep expertise in:
    • Validating radio and front-end performance across 400MHz to 70GHz bands, with a specific focus on high-reliability consumer electronics.
    • Proven ability to translate Product Requirements into technical RF specifications.
    • Advanced skills in debugging desense, interference, and coexistence issues in multi-radio environments.
    • Encoding methods and modulation schemes such as OFDM, Frequency hopping, QAM, GFSK, UWB, convolution encoding, STBC.
    • Expert-level operation of VNA, Spectrum Analyzers, Signal Generators, and Wideband Radio Communication Testers (i.e. IQxel, LitePoint, or Rohde & Schwarz).
    • RF emission requirements and testing for FCC, ETSI, Radio and Emission qualifications.
    • Debugging RF issues. Setting up, running and evaluating of TIS, TRP, BER, Return Loss, Desense, radiation patterns, etc
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in RF/Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in RF design, development, and validation, with a proven track record of bringing products to market.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills, with an ability to tackle complex, ambiguous problems.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

  • RF simulation tools like CST or HFSS.
  • Familiarity with common MAC Layer protocols. WiFi, BLE, Zigbee, Z-wave etc or be willing to learn and build expertise in this area.
  • Familiarity with MAC level protocol analyzers.
  • Familiarity with cellular communications.
  • Python or MATLAB skills for data analysis and test equipment automation.

The target annual base pay range for this role is $118,600 to $174,000.

This target annual base pay range represents our good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this role. We use a market-based compensation approach to set our target annual base pay ranges and make adjustments annually. We carefully tailor individual compensation packages, including base pay, taking into consideration employees' job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and other relevant business factors.
