What is a Revit Technician?

A Revit Technician is a professional who specializes in using Autodesk Revit, a Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, to create and manage detailed 3D models and technical drawings for architectural, structural, or MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) projects. They assist architects, engineers, and designers by ensuring accurate and efficient digital representations of buildings or structures. Their responsibilities include producing detailed drawings, coordinating models with different disciplines, and maintaining project documentation. Strong technical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of industry standards are essential for success in this role.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a Revit Technician?

To thrive as a Revit Technician, you need proficiency in Autodesk Revit software, a solid understanding of architectural or engineering drafting, and a relevant technical diploma or degree. Familiarity with BIM (Building Information Modeling) processes, rendering plugins, and standards like COBie or LEED is often expected, along with any certifications in Revit or BIM. Strong attention to detail, effective time management, and collaborative communication skills distinguish top-performing technicians. These abilities ensure accurate, efficient project modeling and seamless teamwork within multidisciplinary design and construction environments.

REVIT Technician

The Gateway Engineers, Inc.

Pittsburgh, PA • On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Retirement, PTO

Re-posted 5 days ago

Job description

This position is full-time in person. No prior work experience required.

Gateway Engineers is a multi-million-dollar, full-service civil engineering consulting firm with ~240 employees across Pittsburgh, PA, Butler, PA, and Raleigh, NC.

Our mission is to help clients reach a higher level of success through knowledge, experience, and responsiveness. Our employees work alongside 85+ registered professionals and over 45 project managers, fostering growth through performance-based compensation, professional development, and our Act Well / Eat Well / Think Well mindset.

We support our team with unique perks like fresh meals, mobile car detailing, fitness watch subsidies, in-office dental exams, a walking trail, indoor golf simulator, and a collaborative, open office environment.

What we offer:

  • No cost health insurance
  • Dental and vision insurance
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Company paid short-term and long-term disability insurance and life insurance
  • Quarterly performance bonuses
  • PTO and 8 paid holidays
  • 401(k) match & 401(k) Roth and Profit Sharing
  • Student loan repayment and tuition reimbursement
  • Company paid professional society memberships & professional licensure registration fees
  • Employee referral program

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of or be willing to learn:

  • Develop structural Revit models and drawing sets from architectural backgrounds and models with minimal markup — foundation plans, framing plans, sections, details, and general notes
  • Lay out gravity framing systems (joist/beam/girder/column spacing, bearing conditions, deck spans) using sound rough-proportioning judgment, with member sizing and final design performed by the project engineer
  • Select and adapt appropriate typical details and basic connections (bearing, shear, base plates, embeds, ledgers) from company standards and industry references, and recognize where a project-specific detail is needed
  • Recognize which structural systems are applicable to a given project type — steel, cast-in-place and precast concrete, masonry, cold-formed and conventional wood framing — and set up plans accordingly
  • Read and interpret architectural, structural, and MEP drawings and specifications, and identify coordination conflicts, missing information, and constructability issues early
  • Support design-phase clash detection and BIM/Revit coordination workflows across multidisciplinary models
  • Participate in model-based design reviews, including constructability, operability, and maintainability reviews
  • Maintain drawing sets through design revisions, permit comments, and construction-phase changes (RFIs, as-builts)
  • Organize and coordinate technical documents consistent with company BIM/Revit and drawing standards, and perform quality control checks on your own work before engineer review

This opportunity requires:

Education

  • Associate or Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Aided Drafting, Drafting & Design Technology, or related field — or equivalent experience in structural Revit/BIM production
3+ years of structural drafting/design experience preferred, with a portfolio or work samples demonstrating structural plan and detail development
Proficiency in Revit Structure required; AutoCAD and Civil 3D a plus
Familiarity with AISC, ACI, and TMS detailing conventions a plus
Experience with Navisworks, BIM 360/ACC, or Bluebeam a plus
