What is a retrofit?

Retrofit jobs involve modifying or upgrading existing buildings, systems, or equipment to improve their performance, efficiency, or compliance with new standards. This typically includes installing new technology or making structural changes to enhance energy efficiency, safety, or usability. Retrofit professionals may work on projects like updating HVAC systems, adding insulation, or integrating renewable energy solutions into older structures. The goal of retrofitting is often to extend the life of existing assets while reducing environmental impact and operational costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a retrofit coordinator?

To thrive as a Retrofit Coordinator, you need strong project management skills, a solid understanding of building construction and energy efficiency, often supported by relevant qualifications like a Level 5 Diploma in Retrofit Coordination. Familiarity with software such as PAS 2035 compliance tools, energy modeling systems, and building information modeling (BIM) is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management abilities make someone stand out in this position. These skills are vital for ensuring retrofit projects are delivered efficiently, safely, and in compliance with regulations to achieve sustainability goals.

What are some common challenges faced by retrofit engineers when upgrading older buildings to meet modern energy efficiency standards?

Retrofit Engineers often encounter difficulties such as integrating new technologies with outdated building systems, working within the constraints of existing structural layouts, and ensuring minimal disruption to occupants during upgrades. Balancing cost-effectiveness with the need to comply with updated energy codes and sustainability goals is also a frequent challenge. Successful projects typically require close collaboration with architects, contractors, and building owners to develop tailored solutions that improve efficiency while preserving the building’s integrity.

Position Overview

As a Service Retrofit Sheet Metal Installer III, you'll operate as a senior/journeyman-level expert in commercial HVAC retrofit and sheet metal service, independently managing complex ductwork modifications, repairs, installations, and system integrations in office buildings, hospitals, schools, retail spaces, and industrial facilities. With mastery knowledge of dry-side HVAC applications, you'll lead challenging retrofit calls, perform advanced fabrication/sealing/testing, troubleshoot intricate issues, and mentor junior installers while ensuring high-quality, code-compliant results that enhance air distribution, energy efficiency, and indoor air quality. Our people-first culture recognizes your advanced expertise with specialized training, leadership opportunities, and the fulfillment of delivering sustainable, high-performance sheet metal systems nationwide.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Independently fabricate, assemble, install, and repair advanced sheet metal ductwork, fittings, dampers, access doors, and specialty components per blueprints, specifications, and SMACNA standards.
  • Perform layout, field measurements, complex modifications, precise sealing/hanging, and airflow balancing to achieve optimal system performance.
  • Lead service/retrofit calls from start to finish: assess on-site issues, communicate clearly with customers on findings/recommendations/solutions, coordinate parts/materials, execute work, and follow up for satisfaction.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex ductwork problems, including leaks, improper airflow, insulation issues, and system integration challenges.
  • Conduct quality inspections, sealing tests, and adjustments; ensure compliance with SMACNA standards, codes, and project requirements.
  • Document work thoroughly (work orders, reports, photos, as-builts, recommendations) and maintain accurate records for billing, warranty, and continuous improvement.
  • Mentor and guide Service Retrofit Sheet Metal Installer I and II team members by demonstrating advanced techniques, sharing best practices, and supporting on-the-job learning and safety adherence.
  • Maintain clean, organized work areas, vehicles, tools, and PPE; adhere to all safety protocols and company standards.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Yes – Provides coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance to junior Service Retrofit Sheet Metal Installers (Levels I and II); may lead small retrofit crews or coordinate with subcontractors on complex jobs, ensuring alignment with safety, quality, and customer expectations.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Experience: 5+ years in commercial sheet metal/HVAC installation, fabrication, and retrofit work; proven journeyman-level proficiency in handling complex tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; trade school, apprenticeship completion, or relevant certifications (e.g., SMACNA-related) preferred.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding/stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use hand/power tools for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, and manual dexterity required.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Primarily field-based in commercial/industrial settings (indoor/outdoor, varying weather conditions, retrofit sites); exposure to noise, dust, heights, sharp materials, and mechanical hazards; must strictly adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, harnesses, and steel-toed boots at all times—safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position. Occasional regional travel within assigned market or on-call rotations may be required as business needs dictate.

Required Skills

  • Advanced sheet metal fabrication/installation techniques, SMACNA standards mastery, complex duct layout/modification, sealing, and airflow balancing.
  • Blueprint/schematic reading, troubleshooting, and quality inspection/testing.
  • Mentoring/coaching, effective communication with crews, customers, management, and inspectors.
