Retired pastors often find fulfilling roles as interim ministers, guest speakers, or mentors within church networks, as well as taking on part-time counseling or teaching positions. Many participate in volunteer work, such as leading Bible studies, providing support in chaplaincy settings, or serving on nonprofit boards. The flexibility and wealth of experience that retired pastors offer are highly valued in short-term projects, pastoral care teams, and community outreach programs. Engaging in these roles allows retired pastors to maintain meaningful connections and continue making a positive impact while enjoying the flexibility that comes with retirement.
A Retired Pastor is a former clergy member who has stepped down from full-time ministry but may still offer spiritual guidance, preach occasionally, or mentor others in the faith community. While no longer holding an official church leadership role, they may volunteer, officiate services, or provide counseling. Many Retired Pastors continue to serve in a limited capacity based on their experience and calling.
Retired pastors bring years of experience in spiritual leadership, community engagement, and counseling, often supported by advanced theological education or seminary training. Knowledge of church administration systems, pastoral care documentation, and denominational protocols may also be relevant, especially if pursuing part-time roles or volunteer opportunities. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and adaptability allow retired pastors to continue providing support and guidance in various settings. These skills are crucial for maintaining meaningful connections and using past experience to enrich faith communities or service organizations post-retirement.

Franconia UMC is seeking a compassionate, creative, and organized person to become our part-time Director of Children’s Ministry (DCM) to help children (birth–6th grade) grow in faith and experience God’s love in meaningful, lasting ways. If you enjoy building relationships with children and parents, leading volunteers, and shaping joyful ministry moments, this role might be your perfect fit.
This part‐time position includes a few weekly commitments plus flexible planning hours, making it ideal for seminarians, educators, retired teachers, or anyone balancing other part‐time work. Average 28 hours weekly, subject to ebb and flow of church activities. The DCM reports to the Pastor and works closely with staff, volunteers, and families to create a welcoming, safe, and engaging ministry.
