What does a retail project manager do?

As a retail project manager, you create and execute plans according to the established business objectives of a retail store or organization. As part of your duties, you may liaise with vendors to ensure delivery of stock or merchandise, coordinate with vendors for changes in orders or delivery processes, train and manage staff regarding project goals and metrics, establish timelines and reporting goals for projects, and otherwise ensure project success. While your responsibilities are largely identical to non-retail project managers, you must nonetheless have a thorough understanding of the retail world in general, and the specific needs of your organization in particular. Your projects may fundamentally change the way customers interact with and understand the organization or brand, and you must be cognizant that your projects affect this relationship in a positive manner.

What does a retail project manager do?

A Retail Project Manager oversees the planning, execution, and completion of projects within a retail environment, such as store openings, renovations, or rollout of new technology. They coordinate between various teams, manage budgets and timelines, and ensure that projects meet company standards and objectives. Their role is crucial for delivering projects on time, within budget, and to the required quality, often involving both on-site and remote work. Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills are essential for success in this position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a retail project manager?

To thrive as a Retail Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, retail industry experience, and a relevant degree (often in business, management, or a related field). Familiarity with project management software (like MS Project or Asana), budgeting tools, and inventory management systems is typically required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help drive team performance and stakeholder satisfaction. These skills ensure that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and aligned with business goals, which is critical for retail success.

How does a retail project manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a store rollout or renovation project?

A Retail Project Manager regularly works with cross-functional teams such as merchandising, store operations, construction, IT, and marketing. Collaboration includes coordinating timelines, ensuring all departments are aligned on project goals, and facilitating clear communication to address challenges as they arise. The Project Manager often leads meetings, manages documentation, and acts as the central point of contact to ensure each team completes its deliverables on schedule. This collaborative approach helps deliver projects that meet both operational requirements and brand standards.

Job description

Project Manager — Retail Programs
Deacon Construction · Seattle, WA (Home Base) Full-Time
Deacon Construction is looking for an experienced Project Manager to join our Retail Programs team. This is a leadership role for someone who knows how to run multiple retail construction projects at once, keeps budgets and schedules tight, and builds the kind of client relationships that turn into repeat work, delivering projects on schedule and to our clients' high standards, including work for clients like Safeway, Walmart, Tesla, 5 Below, and many more.
WHO WE ARE
At Deacon, we believe that great projects are built by great people, and great people deserve a place where they are genuinely valued. Our focus is simple: put our people first, build excellent projects, and maintain the long-standing client relationships that have defined our reputation for over 45 years.
We work hard, take pride in what we build, and hold ourselves to a high standard. We also know that the best teams are the ones that enjoy showing up every day, which means taking time to connect, celebrate, and support one another, whether you're in the office or out in the field.
As we expand across the West and beyond, we are committed to maintaining the heart of who Deacon is: people who care about their work, their teams, and each other.
WHY JOIN DEACON?
  • People-first culture with mentorship, training, and real opportunities for advancement.
  • Meaningful project work on a growing portfolio of retail construction projects for national retail clients, including Safeway, Walmart, Tesla, 5 Below, and many more, across Washington and the Pacific Northwest.
  • Stability and growth: privately held, financially strong, and expanding for over 45 years.
  • Competitive travel package including per diem, lodging, and a vehicle allowance for site visits.
  • A team that works hard and takes care of each other in the field and at home.
  • Community involvement through our Deacon Charitable Foundation and Community Engagement Committee.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a Project Manager on Deacon's Retail Programs team, you will own the full lifecycle of retail construction and remodel projects for national retail clients across Washington and the surrounding Pacific Northwest, with Seattle, WA as your home base. You will typically manage several projects at once, each moving through a different phase, so strong organization and clear communication matter as much as construction knowledge. You will partner closely with your Superintendent in the field, manage budgets and schedules, coordinate the design and permitting process, and be the main point of contact for the client's construction team. Because much of this work happens in active, occupied stores, you'll be planning around the client's operational needs as much as the construction schedule itself.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Own the full project lifecycle, from preconstruction through closeout, on retail construction and remodel projects for national retail clients, including Safeway, Walmart, Tesla, 5 Below, and many more, across Washington and the Pacific Northwest.
  • Manage 3 to 5 concurrent projects at varying stages, prioritizing across a moving pipeline without letting any one project slip.
  • Build and manage project budgets, track costs, and process change orders, pay applications, and subcontracts.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules in partnership with the Superintendent, including phased sequencing for work in occupied stores.
  • Manage RFIs, submittals, and the overall flow of project documentation between the design team, subcontractors, and the client.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the client's construction and facilities teams, keeping communication clear and proactive.
  • Solicit and negotiate subcontractor bids, and hold trade partners accountable to scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Travel to job sites as needed to walk projects, resolve field issues, and support the Superintendent through key milestones and inspections.
  • Manage project closeout, ensuring a clean handoff to the client with minimal disruption to store operations.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5 or more years of project management experience on commercial construction projects, with retail construction experience strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, including work in active or occupied retail environments.
  • Strong grasp of budgets, scheduling, contracts, and the overall financial health of a project.
  • Excellent communicator and relationship builder comfortable working directly with client construction teams, store operations, and trade partners.
  • Willing and able to travel to job sites throughout Washington and the Pacific Northwest as needed; home base in Seattle, WA.
  • Experience with Procore or similar project management tools is a plus.
  • OSHA 30 certification preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field preferred, but not required.
