Job description

About Us:

Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) is a global Jewish human rights organization that confronts anti-Semitism and hate, defends the safety of Israel and Jews worldwide, and teaches the lessons of the Holocaust through awareness, advocacy, justice, education, and its Museums of Tolerance. With a constituency of over 400,000 member families since its founding in 1977, the SWC has an international footprint through its Museums of Tolerance, Moriah Films, and the Digital Terrorism + Hate Project.

Headquartered in Los Angeles, it maintains operations in New York, Chicago, Miami, Toronto, Paris, Berlin, Jerusalem, and Buenos Aires. It is an accredited Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) at the United Nations, UNESCO, the Organization of American States, the Latin American Parliament, and the Council of Europe and maintains relationships with the highest levels of governments throughout the world.

In 1993, the Center opened the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles to worldwide acclaim. The Museum has served as the Center’s flagship educational arm, challenging visitors to confront bigotry and racism, and to understand the Holocaust in both historical and contemporary contexts. In addition, the Center developed Moriah Media to produce theatrical documentaries to educate global audiences. Moriah has produced 17 documentaries to date, two of which have received the Academy Award for best feature documentary, The Long Way Home and Genocide.

About the Role:

The Museum of Tolerance is seeking a dynamic and highly organized Floor Operations Manager to serve as the operational leader of the museum floor and retail store. In this role, you will help bring the museum experience to life—ensuring that every visitor, student group, and guest encounters a welcoming, well-organized, and inspiring environment.

As the manager of daily floor operations, you will oversee frontline staff, volunteers, and retail activity while ensuring that museum operations run smoothly and at the highest level of professionalism. You will play a key role in creating an exceptional visitor experience while maintaining strong coordination across departments including education, security, facilities, and audiovisual teams.

This is a highly visible role that requires strong leadership, attention to detail, and a passion for mission-driven work.

This position reports to the Deputy Director and is based onsite in Los Angeles.

About You:

You are an energetic and organized leader who thrives in environments where education, public engagement, and operational excellence intersect. You enjoy interacting with people from diverse backgrounds and are passionate about creating meaningful experiences for students, educators, and visitors.

You are someone who:

  • Leads with professionalism and positivity
  • Enjoys being present and active on the floor
  • Anticipates challenges and solves problems quickly
  • Takes pride in ensuring every visitor has an outstanding experience

You bring both leadership and hands-on operational skills, and you are comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Museum Floor Operations

  • Oversee the daily operations of the museum floor, retail store, and ticket desk to ensure a seamless and welcoming visitor experience.
  • Maintain a consistent presence throughout the museum, offering leadership, support, and problem-solving as needed.
  • Supervise and support floor staff, volunteers, and retail team members.

Staff Leadership & Scheduling

  • Partner with Floor Coordinators to schedule and supervise museum floor staff and volunteers.
  • Collaborate with the Museum Education Department to recruit, onboard, and train new floor and retail staff.
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, teamwork, and visitor-focused service.

Visitor Experience & Engagement

  • Serve as a visible point of contact for visitors, ensuring a positive and meaningful museum experience.
  • Support student groups, educators, and general visitors during their time in the museum.
  • Manage visitor communications including voicemail and email inquiries.

Cross-Department Collaboration

  • Work closely with Security to ensure safety protocols are followed by staff and visitors.
  • Coordinate with the Chief Engineer and AV Manager to ensure facilities and exhibits remain fully operational.
  • Support smooth coordination across museum departments to maintain high standards of service.

Reporting & Operational Tracking

  • Prepare monthly operational reports including:
  • General admission tracking
  • Retail sales and inventory
  • Visitor feedback and evaluation surveys
  • Monitor retail performance and support operational improvements when needed.

Experience & Skills:

Required Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of retail, customer service, or visitor experience management (museum, cultural institution, or nonprofit preferred).
  • At least 2 years of supervisory or management experience.

Core Skills

  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to guide and motivate staff and volunteers.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Personal Qualities

  • Personable, welcoming, and confident interacting with the public.
  • Self-starter who can work independently while collaborating across teams.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where flexibility and problem-solving are essential.
  • Passionate about contributing to a safe, inclusive, and collaborative workplace culture.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a museum, cultural institution, or educational environment.
  • Familiarity with Shopify or similar retail platforms.

Our Benefits:

We value our people and offer a collaborative and engaging culture. As a SWC employee, you will enjoy work/life balance, generous time off and comprehensive benefits and programs.  The Simon Wiesenthal Center embraces inclusivity and values our diverse community. We are committed to building a team based on qualifications, merit and business need. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer and do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
