Job description

This is an onsite role in Chesapeake, VA.

Summary of Position

Family Dollar supports a complex retail network and drives growth through a data-driven, location intelligence strategy. The GIS Analyst supports enterprise GIS and retail analytics by building spatial models, automated workflows, and advanced analytics using Python, ArcGIS ModelBuilder, and Alteryx. This role focuses on retail use cases such as site selection, white space analysis, and sales forecasting, delivering scalable insights to Real Estate, Operations, Asset Protection, and executive leadership.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Spatial Modeling & Retail Analytics

  • Design, build, and maintain geospatial to support retail initiatives including site selection, trade area analysis, white space analysis, sales forecasting, and store performance evaluation.
  • Apply advanced analytical techniques (e.g., predictive modeling, suitability modeling, clustering, or machine learning-assisted analysis) to enhance site selection and market opportunity assessments.
  • Translate complex business questions into scalable spatial and analytical models that support enterprise decision-making.
  • Evaluate store networks, market coverage, and customer access across a large, multi-site retail footprint.

Data Automation

  • Integrate Alteryx workflows with Python scripts and ArcGIS geoprocessing tools to create end-to-end automated analytics pipelines.
  • Monitor, optimize, and document workflows to ensure reliability, scalability, and data governance.
  • Use Python to automate spatial modeling and AI-assisted analytics workflows, sales forecasting and site evaluation processes and scheduled geoprocessing, data refresh, and QA/QC tasks
  • Maintain and enhance existing models and scripts to improve performance, consistency, and reusability across the GIS environment.

GIS Applications & Mapping

  • Create, publish, and maintain web maps, dashboards, and map services using ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise.
  • Develop interactive mapping products that allow business users to explore retail, market, and operational insights.
  • Support ad hoc spatial analysis and mapping requests from internal stakeholders and senior leadership.

Data Management & Integration

  • Coordinate with third-party data providers to ensure accurate and timely delivery of demographic, competitive, and market datasets.
  • Assist in the maintenance, configuration, and governance of SQL-based GIS databases supporting modeling and analytics workflows.
  • Support data quality initiatives to ensure GIS outputs are accurate, consistent, and decision-ready.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Real Estate, Operations, Asset Protection, IT, and Analytics teams to align GIS solutions with business goals.
  • Provide technical documentation and knowledge sharing related to GIS models, workflows, and AI-enabled analytics.
  • Contribute to GIS standards, best practices, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Minimum Requirements / Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • 3-5+ years of hands-on experience in GIS analysis and spatial modeling.
  • Strong expertise with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Enterprise.
  • Proficiency in Python for geospatial analysis, automation, and advanced analytics.
  • Hands-on experience developing and maintaining Alteryx workflows for data integration and GIS database updates.
  • Working knowledge of relational databases and SQL concepts.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present analytical insights to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrates highly analytical and complex problem-solving skills, with strong attention to detail and the ability to effectively prioritize work while adapting to shifting priorities in a fast-paced, data-driven environment.

Preferred / Desired Qualifications

  • Experience supporting GIS and analytics in a retail or multi-site enterprise environment.
  • Hands-on experience applying AI or advanced analytics to:
    • Retail site selection, white space and market opportunity analysis
    • Store performance or sales forecasting models
  • Familiarity with demographic, consumer behavior, and competitive retail datasets.
  • Exposure to business intelligence or reporting tools (e.g., Power BI) is a plus.
