What is a Responsible Managing Employee?

A Responsible Managing Employee (RME) is a qualified individual employed by a company who is designated to supervise construction operations and ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and standards. The RME generally holds the required professional licenses and is responsible for overseeing daily activities on job sites, making sure all work adheres to safety and quality guidelines. In many states, especially in the construction industry, an RME is required for a business to obtain or maintain its contractor’s license. The RME’s presence assures regulators and clients that the company’s work is being managed by a competent professional. If the RME leaves the company, the business often must appoint a new one to remain in compliance.
