What does a residential solar project manager do?

A Residential Solar Project Manager oversees the planning, execution, and completion of solar panel installation projects for homes. Their responsibilities include coordinating with clients, contractors, and suppliers to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and according to quality standards. They handle permits, scheduling, and resolve any issues that arise during the installation process. Additionally, they ensure compliance with local regulations and safety guidelines, and may also be involved in system design and customer education.

How does a residential solar project manager typically collaborate with installation teams and clients during a project?

A Residential Solar Project Manager acts as the central coordinator between clients, installation crews, and other stakeholders throughout a solar project. They frequently communicate with installation teams to ensure timelines, site requirements, and safety protocols are met, while also keeping homeowners informed about project milestones and addressing any concerns. Effective collaboration requires strong organizational skills, transparency, and the ability to manage expectations on both sides. This role often involves onsite visits, regular progress meetings, and problem-solving to ensure the project is completed successfully and to the client's satisfaction.

What you will get to do:
  • Lead projects from handoff to completion, guiding each milestone from contract signing through installation and PTO.
  • Manage the transition from Sales by aligning teams on scope, timeline, and deliverables to ensure a smooth project start.
  • Keep all project documentation, plans, notes, permits, and approvals organized and up to date in tracking systems.
  • Coordinate with engineers, contractors, and suppliers to finalize design details and confirm equipment selections.
  • Monitor scope, cost, and schedule changes, collaborating with Sales to align expectations with customers.
  • Prepare and manage permit and interconnection packages, ensuring timely submissions and approvals with AHJs and utilities.
  • Plan materials and logistics to ensure all components are ordered, delivered, and ready for installation on schedule.
  • Facilitate communication across all stakeholders with clear updates, risk tracking, and action item follow-up.
  • Track multiple active projects simultaneously, maintaining visibility of schedules, budgets, and progress.
  • Drive each project to a successful finish, achieving on-time installations, complete documentation, and satisfied customers.
What will make you successful
  • Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • 2-3 years of hands-on project coordination or management experience
  • Familiarity with project management processes and tools
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow-through
  • Ability to stay detail-focused while maintaining awareness of the bigger picture
  • Tech-savvy; proficient with Microsoft Office and project tracking systems
