What is residential drafting?

Residential drafting is the process of creating detailed technical drawings and plans for houses and other residential buildings. These drawings include floor plans, elevations, sections, and construction details that guide builders, contractors, and engineers during the construction or renovation of homes. Residential drafters use computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce accurate and precise representations of architectural designs, ensuring that the project meets building codes and client specifications. Their work is essential for translating ideas into clear, actionable construction documents.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Residential Drafter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Residential Drafter, you need strong proficiency in architectural drawing, spatial planning, and a solid understanding of building codes, often supported by an associate degree or technical certification in drafting. Familiarity with CAD software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and knowledge of BIM systems are typically required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving skills set standout drafters apart in collaborating with architects, engineers, and clients. These skills ensure accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in creating residential building plans that meet client needs and regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in residential drafting, and how can they be addressed?

Residential drafters often encounter challenges such as managing multiple projects with tight deadlines, interpreting varying client preferences, and staying updated with evolving building codes. It is important to develop strong organizational skills to prioritize tasks and communicate proactively with architects, engineers, and clients to clarify requirements. Keeping current with the latest drafting software and local regulations also helps ensure accuracy and compliance, making the work process smoother and more efficient.

Job description

Architectural Drafter - Residential Construction (Higharc)
United Built Homes is seeking an Architectural Drafter to join our team, focused on developing construction documents for homes we build across Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma.
This is not a traditional drafting role.
We are actively transitioning our plan development and construction documentation into Higharc, a modern, parametric home design platform that allows us to move faster, reduce errors, and bring consistency to our plans at scale.
If you have residential drafting experience and are interested in working with a more advanced, system-driven approach to home design, this role will be a good fit.
What You'll Do
  • Develop and finalize construction documents for sold homes
  • Work within Higharc to generate and refine plan sets
  • Review and validate drawings for accuracy, completeness, and buildability
  • Coordinate with internal teams (sales, design, construction) to ensure plans align with customer selections and field requirements
  • Help identify and resolve edge cases where plans require additional attention or clarification
  • Contribute to improving how we standardize and scale our plan library

Why This Role Is Different
Most drafting roles are reactive and one-off. This role is about building a system.
You will be working in Higharc, where plans are:
  • Configurable instead of static
  • Standardized instead of reinvented
  • Connected to pricing and construction logic

We are building a scalable, semi-custom home platform, and drafting is a critical part of making that work.
Location
  • Shreveport, LA

Perks and Benefits
  • Competitive pay with long-term stability (65+ year company)
  • Medical, dental, vision insurance
  • Paid vacation, holidays, and personal leave
  • Employer-paid life and LTD insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • HSA with company contribution

About United Built Homes
At United Built Homes, we build on our customers' land and manage the process from design through construction and financing. We are focused on bringing consistency, speed, and quality to a part of the industry that has traditionally lacked all three.
Qualifications
  • Experience with residential construction drawings (required)
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, or similar CAD software
  • Strong attention to detail and understanding of how homes are actually built
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet deadlines
  • Willingness to learn and work within a structured, system-driven design environment
