What is residential drafting?

Residential drafting is the process of creating detailed technical drawings and plans for houses and other residential buildings. These drawings include floor plans, elevations, sections, and construction details that guide builders, contractors, and engineers during the construction or renovation of homes. Residential drafters use computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce accurate and precise representations of architectural designs, ensuring that the project meets building codes and client specifications. Their work is essential for translating ideas into clear, actionable construction documents.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a residential drafter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Residential Drafter, you need strong proficiency in architectural drawing, spatial planning, and a solid understanding of building codes, often supported by an associate degree or technical certification in drafting. Familiarity with CAD software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and knowledge of BIM systems are typically required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving skills set standout drafters apart in collaborating with architects, engineers, and clients. These skills ensure accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in creating residential building plans that meet client needs and regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in residential drafting, and how can they be addressed?

Residential drafters often encounter challenges such as managing multiple projects with tight deadlines, interpreting varying client preferences, and staying updated with evolving building codes. It is important to develop strong organizational skills to prioritize tasks and communicate proactively with architects, engineers, and clients to clarify requirements. Keeping current with the latest drafting software and local regulations also helps ensure accuracy and compliance, making the work process smoother and more efficient.

Job description

About Us
Higharc is a VC-backed startup that is changing how new homes are designed and built. Join a founding team who've shipped products for Autodesk, Electronic Arts, Nike, and Apple. We have raised over $175M with support from top-notch venture capital firms and more than 18 strategic investors: industry leaders in construction, building products manufacturing, and distribution.
Higharc is seeking a Residential Drafter | Implementation Specialist to join our Implementation team. In this role, you'll be the technical backbone of our builder onboarding process - translating production homebuilder workflows and plan sets into the Higharc platform and serving as a trusted expert for both customers and internal teams.
What You'll Do
  • Lead implementation of builder homes into the Higharc Editor, managing task progress and gaps through to delivery
  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for builder product leads, translating existing plans and documentation into Higharc-compatible settings
  • Represent Higharc in technical pre-sales conversations and provide ongoing technical support to platform users
  • Deliver QA/QC on the Editor product, logging bugs and surfacing issues with precision and context
  • Contribute subject matter expertise as a target user, providing structured feedback that informs product direction
  • Assist architecture and engineering teams in defining requirements based on field experience and builder workflows

About You
You bring deep expertise in production homebuilding documentation and the credibility to establish trust quickly with builder teams. You're a self-directed project owner who closes the loop - and you're ready to grow into leading a team as implementation scales.
You have:
  • 1+ years of experience in residential drafting or architectural design, ideally with a production homebuilder
  • Proficient in CAD/BIM software, with hands-on experience producing construction documents
  • Comprehension and experience with U.S. building practices, means & methods, and building codes
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects through to completion
  • Subject matter expert capable of quickly establishing credibility in the domain
  • Shows potential to manage a team of internal or external resources to execute implementation of homes into Higharc.
  • Must be based in North or South America and able to work across US-based time zones
Working at Higharc
Remote work and travel: Our company is entirely remote, and has been since we were founded in 2018. Remote work means more time with family, less time commuting, and the flexibility to blend work and life. We value in-person collaboration and asynchronous deep-work time, which is why we schedule regular team meet-ups in our hubs across the US and, depending on the role, prioritize hiring in those hubs. If your role requires frequent travel beyond pre-scheduled team meet ups, we will represent that to the best of our ability as early as possible in the interview process.
Compensation and benefits: Higharc offers competitive salaries with significant equity, in a fast-growing, well-funded company. We provide comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, with flexible PTO, and meaningful maternity/paternity leave to all U.S based employees that are full-time. You'll also have access to other big-company benefits such like short and long-term disability plans and a 401K. We also provide a stipend to create the ideal home office and support ongoing L&D.
Please note: we are seeing an uptick of fraudulent recruiting activity claiming to be associated with Higharc. All communication and outreach from our in-house team will come from an @higharc.com email address.
