Definition of Classification:

The Associate Dean of Residence Life and Housing serves as the chief student housing officer providing leadership and visionary strategic planning. The inspirational leader ensures the department supports both University needs, academic mission, core values, and holistic student success and development within a thriving and dynamic living-learning residential program experience as well as provides leadership, direction and supervision to residential life, housing, inclusive of student Undergraduate, Greek Life, and Graduate and Family Housing. The Associate Dean will also partner with Johnston Center for Integrative Studies and Woodbury Residence Life to ensure operational guidance, support, and systemwide integration. 

The thought partner is committed to inclusive excellence and builds collaborative partnerships with academic and non-academic departments to develop high quality and innovative residential student-focused co-curriculum and programs to reflect national best practices in residential education programs within liberal arts environments, anchoring student career and life skill development outcomes, and high impact practices.  This includes partnerships with academic affairs via expansion of faculty and student engagement opportunities, and initiatives that support student success, wellbeing, development, retention, and engagement.  The Associate Dean will provide supervisory oversight for professional staff members, graduate assistants, undergraduate student employees, undergraduate student leaders, along with staff training and development in support of the University’s educational objectives. This is a 12-month full-time position with the opportunity to live-on in a rent-free apartment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Housing and Residence Life:

  • Oversee Residence Life and Housing, including staffing and supervision, departmental budget management and oversight (including gift funding), marketing and program development, contract management, residential facilities, housing operations, policy development and implementation, relationship cultivation (internal and external partnerships), technology and assessment.
  • Provide systemwide oversight, alignment, direction, and training for use of housing software. Leads related cross-campus departmental partnerships.
  • Develop and implement a robust residential education co-curriculum program model with a focus on community belonging, meaningful student living-learning residential community experience, inclusive excellence, class-based Bulldog Pathways initiatives and programs integration, and skill development through high impact practices supporting student success in collaboration with campus partners.
  • Enhance resident assistant high impact student leadership experience, inclusive of an academic course, integrating experiential learning and career development.
  • Enhance residential student engagement through development of Residential Hall Association and support establishment of peer-based educational residential student conduct board.
  • Expand partnership with Student Campus Life and Office of Inclusion and Community to bolster student engagement and community connection, including late-night and weekend programming (e.g. Hunsaker After Dark), and Greek Life residential student experience.

Supervision and Training:

  • Provide supervision and training for professional, paraprofessional, graduate assistants, undergraduate student employees, undergraduate student leaders, and formulate individual performance and professional development goals aligned with the department’s mission and strategic plan. Provides dotted line supervision to Woodbury Residence Life Coordinator.
  • Meets regularly with direct reports to assess progress towards goals, track and evaluate residential student retention and outcomes, key performance indicators, discuss professional growth and development, provide support and direction, promote teamwork and individual accountability, and acknowledge performance milestones and achievements.
  • Provide training and coaching support to departmental staff in programming, emergency preparedness and response (including, but not limited to, Title IX related incidents), residential education and co-curriculum, leadership development, safety, student crisis intervention, and risk management.

Administrative:

  • Coordinate all on-call duty schedules and training regarding duties and responsibilities for residential life staff and student leaders. Perform on-call duty coverage on a rotating basis and respond to student crises and campus emergencies when necessary. Conduct annual review of on-call procedures and training.
  • Manage referrals and student issues related to distress/crisis interventions and policy violations, following internal protocols and procedures.
  • Serve as the designee for the Dean of Students in their absence and as necessary due to caseload.
  • Represent the Division of Student Affairs as funds permit at regional and national meetings to maintain knowledge of best practices, support professional development, and strive to enhance student housing and wellbeing at the University.
  • Serve as one of the leaders within the Division of Student Affairs responsible for the execution of a transformational student experience, student success initiatives and cultivating community in alignment with the institutional strategic plan.
  • Develop assessment plan for residence life with an emphasis on programmatic evaluation to identify student retention, persistence and experience outcomes and identify strategies that will facilitate the creation and/or modification of effective, data-informed and impactful residential initiatives.
  • Conduct related evaluation and research as needed based on national emerging trends, issues, best practices, and/or systemic operational needs to enhance student success.
  • Perform a variety of administrative duties, including providing semester reports, surveys, data analysis, and other requested documents to prioritize data-informed practices. Serve on divisional assessment committee.
  • Participate in policy development and revision along with the creation of systems and procedures for implementation of new and ongoing policies.
  • Serve on various Student Affairs and University committees, supports divisional and campuswide initiatives and programs, and serve in other capacities as assigned.
  • Support the Dean of Students and Vice President for Student Affairs in completion of special projects, programs and services that support the mission of the University and the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Managing student information, data, and records in accordance with FERPA.
  • Assist in serving as conduct hearing officer and investigator when needed.
  • Perform other essential duties, projects, and tasks assigned.

Budgets and Fundraising:

  • Partner closely with admissions and business and finance on annual enrollment and housing projections.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of grant proposals and divisional fundraising priorities, ensuring alignment with donor interests and organizational needs.
  • Oversee the budgets and finances for all supervised areas, ensuring compliance with university policies and procedures and/or activity fee guidelines.
  • Provide oversight of departmental, gift funds, grant funding and compliance with fund assurances such as gift tracking, reporting and donor funding guidelines.
  • Assist in “friend building” in collaboration with division leadership and the Office of Advancement to garner financial support among current and potential stakeholders. Foster meaningful programmatic engagement and affinity with alumni, parents and family members, and community stakeholders.

 Qualification Guidelines

      Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:

      Experience/Training/Education:

            • Master’s degree in counseling, education, student affairs, or related field.
            • Five years of professional work experience in residence life and housing, inclusive of student conduct hearing officer and CARE Team membership experience.
            • Experience with student wellbeing, wellness programs, and/or health education outreach programs.
            • A valid California Class C CA drivers’ license with a good driving record is Note: Out-of-state licenses are valid until appointment. A valid California Class “C” driver’s license must be obtained within ten (10) days of appointment (in accordance with CA Vehicle Code 12505c).

            Knowledge and Skills:            

            • Strong understanding of the importance of student leadership development theoretical models, co-curricular programs, student learning outcomes and assessment in supporting the academic mission of the division and values of the University.
            • Demonstrated strong knowledge and awareness of best practices regarding safety of students involved with residence life, residential education, student wellbeing practices, CARE Team, student conduct, and co-curricular programs.
            • Demonstrated commitment to promoting unity and community in a diverse environment, and knowledge of trends, implementation of effective practices that result in student engagement, persistence and retention especially for historically underrepresented students.
            • Team-oriented with the ability to interact collaboratively and effectively with diverse constituencies, fostering strong positive working relationships with campus partners, stakeholders, leadership and students.
            • Excellent interpersonal, communication, analytical, and leadership skills. Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with all levels within the University amongst diverse populations, including students, staff, faculty, administrators, families, and other internal and external constituents and partners, verbally and in writing.
            • Demonstrated experience in supervising a team of multiple full-time professional staff members along with student staff, setting visionary departmental direction and development, and making appropriate personnel actions along with the ability to evaluate and effectively address performance.
            • Ability to apply strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills and train and evaluate performance, taking corrective action as needed and dealing with stressful situations while maintaining professionalism, respect, and composure.
            • Strong ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, with strong organizational and time-management skills along with financial acumen and the ability of manage budgets from an array of funding sources.
            • Ability to use computer technology and systems, including recent versions of Microsoft Office Suite, social media and internet research. Demonstrated experience using common residence life and student conduct computer application programs such as Maxient, The Housing Director (THD), Navigate, Colleague, UltiPro, StarRez, and eRezLife
            • Ability to handle complex and difficult crises situations while remaining positive, focused, and demonstrating political acumen to prioritize effective community incident management, student and community support.
            • Ability to analyze, interpret, and develop proactive and reactive responses to student trends, issues, and needs prevalent in today’s national higher education landscape.
            • Team-oriented with the ability to interact collaboratively and effectively with diverse constituencies, fostering strong positive working relationships with campus partners, stakeholders, leadership and students.
            • Knowledge and demonstrated experience managing compliance with applicable risk and liability issues, safety, policies, crisis response, Title IX training, trends and issues in higher education, state and federal requirements within residence life and behavior intervention.
            • Ability to provide own transportation for local travel as needed. This position requires flexibility to work evening and weekend hours as well as the ability to travel, as required.
            • Demonstrated active engagement in national student affairs field profession and staying current on national best practices and high impact practices to bolster inclusive excellence, student retention and success.
            • Preferred CPR/AED/First Aid Certificate.

            Working Conditions:

            Outdoor and standard office setting. May be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed, including use of safety equipment. Some activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort.

            Physical Demands:

            Activities require standing for varying lengths of time and walking distances outdoors to perform work which requires frequent bending, stooping, reaching, climbing ladders, climb stairs, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 lbs. and working outside in extreme temperatures and in dirty outdoor environment.
