What is research governance?

Research governance refers to the framework of regulations, standards, and processes that ensure research is conducted ethically, legally, and to high scientific standards. It covers aspects such as ethical approval, data protection, participant safety, and compliance with institutional and national guidelines. Research governance helps promote integrity, accountability, and public trust in research activities. It is essential in academic, clinical, and commercial research settings to ensure responsible and transparent conduct.

What are some common challenges faced in a research governance role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Research Governance often encounter challenges such as navigating complex regulatory requirements, ensuring compliance across multiple projects, and balancing the needs of researchers with institutional policies. Staying updated on evolving ethical standards and maintaining clear communication between stakeholders is key. Building strong relationships with research teams and providing regular training can help address these challenges and foster a culture of compliance and ethical research.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in research governance, and why are they important?

To thrive in Research Governance, you need a solid understanding of research ethics, regulatory compliance, and project management, typically supported by a degree in a relevant field such as life sciences or law. Familiarity with systems like IRAS (Integrated Research Application System), GDPR regulations, and certifications such as GCP (Good Clinical Practice) are highly valued. Attention to detail, strong communication, and problem-solving skills are critical for navigating complex approval processes and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills ensure ethical, legally compliant research that protects participants and upholds institutional and regulatory standards.
