To thrive as a Repair Welder, you need expertise in welding techniques, blueprint reading, and metal fabrication, often supported by a high school diploma or welding certification. Familiarity with welding equipment such as MIG, TIG, and stick welders, as well as safety protocols and inspection tools, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong manual dexterity are vital soft skills in this role. These capabilities ensure precise and safe repairs, minimize downtime, and maintain the structural integrity of equipment or structures.

What does a Repair Welder do?

Repair Welder (Structural Pipe amp; Pressure Vessel)

Houston, TX 77015
Night Shift: 6:00 PM – 6:00 AM
Pay: DOE 23.00/hr. - 27.00/hr.

Position Summary

We are hiring a Repair Welder responsible for inspecting, identifying, and repairing weld defects on small to large-diameter pipe (16”–120” OD).

This role is focused on weld quality restoration, not production welding. You will work closely with Quality Control and NDE (Non-Destructive Examination) teams to ensure all repairs meet AWS and ASME code standards.

Primary welding processes:

  • SMAW (Stick – primary)
  • FCAW (Flux Core – as needed)

This is a high-precision, quality-driven welding position requiring strong discipline, attention to detail, and a commitment to doing repairs correctly the first time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform repair welding on long-seam and girth-seam pipe welds (16”–120” OD)
  • Interpret NDE results (RT/X-ray and UT) to locate weld defects
  • Remove defects using air arc gouging and precision grinding
  • Prepare weld areas according to approved WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications)
  • Perform weld repairs in multiple positions (1G, 2G, 3G, etc.)
  • Maintain proper preheat and interpass temperature control
  • Ensure all repairs meet AWS structural and ASME pressure vessel codes
  • Conduct visual inspections prior to QC/NDE release
  • Maintain welding equipment and follow all safety procedures
  • Work in a fast-paced industrial environment with strict quality standards

Qualifications
  • Experience in industrial or structural welding environments
  • Strong SMAW (Stick welding) experience required
  • FCAW experience preferred
  • Repair welding experience (not only fabrication/production welding)
  • Ability to read and interpret X-ray (RT) and/or UT reports
  • Strong understanding of WPS and welding code compliance
  • Skilled in carbon arc gouging and weld defect removal
  • High attention to detail and quality-focused mindset
  • Ability to work safely in high-heat industrial environments
  • Reliable, disciplined, and accountable work ethic

Preferred Experience
  • Large-diameter pipe welding (16”–120” OD)
  • AWS structural steel welding standards
  • ASME pressure vessel experience
  • Experience in NDE/QA-controlled environments

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly
  • Stand for extended periods on concrete or uneven surfaces
  • Frequent bending, squatting, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling
  • Work in tight or confined spaces as needed
  • Operate welding tools with full upper-body mobility
  • Exposure to noise, dust, heat, and industrial equipment
  • Must have adequate visual and hearing ability for safety compliance
