What is a Remote VMware Systems Administrator?

A Remote VMware Systems Administrator is an IT professional who manages, configures, and supports VMware virtual environments from a remote location. Their responsibilities typically include installing and updating VMware products, monitoring virtual machines, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring system security and performance. By working remotely, they use secure connections and management tools to maintain infrastructure for businesses without being physically present at the site. This role is essential for organizations that rely on virtualization for scalability, disaster recovery, and efficient resource utilization.

Is sysadmin an entry level job?

A systems administrator role, including a VMware systems administrator, is typically not considered entry level, as it requires technical skills, experience with server management, and knowledge of virtualization tools. Entry-level positions may exist in related IT support roles, but advanced sysadmin jobs usually demand several years of experience or relevant certifications like VMware Certified Professional (VCP).

What are some common challenges faced by Remote VMware Systems Administrators, and how can they be addressed?

Remote VMware Systems Administrators often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting issues without physical access to hardware, managing multiple virtual environments across different locations, and ensuring robust security for remote connections. These challenges can be addressed by utilizing advanced remote management tools, establishing clear documentation and procedures, and maintaining proactive communication with on-site teams. Staying updated on VMware best practices and security protocols also helps in efficiently resolving issues and minimizing downtime.

Can you work remotely as a system administrator?

Remote VMware Systems Administrators can often work remotely, especially if the organization supports remote access to virtual environments and cloud services. Strong skills in remote management tools, VPNs, and security protocols are essential for effective remote work in this role.

How much does a VMware administrator make?

A VMware Systems Administrator typically earns between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Professionals with advanced skills in virtualization, scripting, and cloud integration may earn higher salaries, especially in enterprise environments.

Is sysadmin a stressful job?

A remote VMware Systems Administrator role can be stressful due to the need for high availability, troubleshooting complex issues, and maintaining security. The job often requires quick problem resolution, attention to detail, and certifications like VCP or VCAP. However, remote work can offer flexibility that helps manage workload stress levels.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote VMware Systems Administrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote VMware Systems Administrator, you need deep knowledge of virtualization concepts, VMware platforms (such as vSphere, ESXi, and vCenter), and a relevant IT degree or certifications like VMware Certified Professional (VCP). Proficiency in tools such as VMware vSphere, PowerCLI scripting, and ticketing systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills help distinguish top professionals in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring system reliability, rapid troubleshooting, and effective remote collaboration in managing virtualized infrastructures.

Support and maintain Atlassian suite (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket) to enable engineering and operational workflows.
Configure and manage Freshservice for IT service management and ticket lifecycle administration.
Develop and maintain scripts and automation (PowerShell, Bash, or similar) to streamline operations and improve system reliability.

Physical Infrastructure:
Deploy, configure, and maintain physical servers in production environments (Proxmox and VMware).
Administer and support NAS systems, including storage provisioning, access control, and backup integration.
Build and maintain custom workstations and specialized systems to meet operational requirements.
Assist with installation, labeling, termination, and troubleshooting of structured network cabling as needed.

Network Infrastructure:
Manage and support LAN environments built on the UniFi network stack.
Configure and maintain UniFi firewalls, switches, and wireless infrastructure across multiple locations.
Implement and troubleshoot routing, switching, and VLAN segmentation.
Configure and manage firewall rules, policies, and threat management features.
Support secure site-to-site and remote connectivity solutions as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience as a System Administrator or in a comparable infrastructure-focused role.
  • Experience supporting and maintaining production IT environments across systems, networking, and end-user platforms.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve infrastructure and system issues independently.
  • Experience implementing IT systems, security best practices, and operational procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Linux environments (Ubuntu or similar) preferred.
Nice to Have
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Relevant industry certifications (Microsoft, VMware, CompTIA Network+/Linux+, CCNA, or similar).
  • Experience with Azure or hybrid cloud environments.
  • Exposure to Zero Trust security principles or modern identity-driven access models.
  • Experience supporting multi-site environments or structured infrastructure standards.
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or manufacturing environments is a plus.
Why E-Space is right for you:
